Parque da Cidade do Barreiro

The Parque da Cidade (City Park) in Barreiro stands on the old Quinta da Maceda estate. In 1927 its owners, the Counts of Castelo Melhor, sold the land for a cork factory. The Granadeiro factory that grew up here was one of the biggest and best equipped in Barreiro in the 1930s and 1940s, with warehouses and boilers for cooking cork bark. The council bought the site in 1985 and opened it as a park in 2000.

Only two pieces of the factory survive. One is the brick chimney. The other is the old workers’ canteen, now the Edifício Américo Marinho, an arts centre. For children, the chimney is a good way into a conversation about what Barreiro used to make, and why a cork factory needed boilers to cook the bark.

The park is central, which the council says makes it the most accessible green space in the city, and parts of it look out over the Coina river.

The council lists a long set of things to do, which is why this park works for families with children of different ages:

• a playground (parque infantil) for younger children
• a skate park
• off-road tracks for mountain bikes (BTT)
• a climbing wall
• an area for traditional games and an outdoor chess area
• lawns for ball games and running about
• four tennis courts
• a picnic area
• two lakes connected by a waterfall

There is also a café with a terrace, three car parks and the Auditório Municipal Augusto Cabrita, a 500-seat theatre that opened in 2003 and puts on shows, exhibitions and cinema.

The skate park sits on the Avenida da Escola dos Fuzileiros Navais side of the park. The council’s pages don’t list its individual ramps and obstacles, so if your child needs to know what’s there before going, a quick look on arrival is the best way.

What makes this park stand out is Sk8G@soline, a set of free beginner skateboarding classes. They are part of @tivo2830, the council’s programme of regular sport with no monthly fees, and they are run by Gasoline, a local non-profit that has promoted skateboarding and surfing in Barreiro for more than a decade. The council’s page gives the details:

• fourth Saturday of the month, at 10:00
• for ages 7 and over
• free, with no booking listed: you just turn up at the skate park

New in Barreiro reported that the 2026 sessions ran in May and June and were due to return on 26 September and 24 October 2026. The council’s records show the classes have been part of the programme since at least 2022. They are aimed at people who have a board at home and gave up after the first wobble, as much as complete beginners. Check the council’s agenda for future dates, since the 2026 sessions have not run every month.

Nothing on the council’s page says children can be left with the instructors, so plan to stay and watch.

• Toddlers have the playground, the lakes to walk round and plenty of grass.
• Children of about 4 to 7 can use the playground, ride scooters or balance bikes on the paths and watch the skaters.
• From 7, children can join the free skate lessons, and older children can try the climbing wall and the bike tracks.
• Teenagers get the skate park, the BTT tracks and tennis, and the chess tables if they want something slower.

No helmet rules were published for the skate park when we checked, but bring a helmet, and ideally knee pads and wrist guards, if your child is joining a lesson. For the bike tracks, a helmet is essential. The climbing wall has no published supervision times, so check what’s allowed on the day.

There is a café with a terrace, and the picnic area gives you somewhere to eat your own food. The council doesn’t list public toilets in its description, so plan around the café.

The council’s pages give no details of the playground’s equipment or the skate park’s layout, so it’s hard to know in advance whether they suit a particular child. Evenings and weekends bring older skaters and riders, and the park is a local city park rather than a quiet nature spot.

For a swim, the Piscina Municipal do Barreiro is in the same town. Skaters who want a bigger challenge can try the bowl at the Almada skate park, and bikers can ride Seixal’s new Casal do Marco pump track.

Are the Barreiro skate lessons really free?
