Piscina Municipal do Barreiro

The Piscina Municipal do Barreiro is the larger of the two indoor pools run by Barreiro council on the south bank of the Tagus. The other is the smaller Piscina Municipal do Lavradio, a few kilometres away, which is where the baby and toddler classes happen (more on that below). Both are open all year and close only on public holidays, on competition and festival days, and for maintenance.

This is a working council pool rather than a leisure centre. There are no slides or splash toys. What it offers families is cheap, reliable indoor swimming: a public session costs under two euros, and on Sunday mornings the pool is open to the public for more than three hours straight.

The council’s pool regulations describe one pool, 25 metres long and 13 metres wide, with a depth that runs from 1.10 metres at the shallow end to 2.13 metres at the deep end. There’s no separate learner pool or toddler pool here, which is the main thing to know if your child can’t yet stand comfortably in water around chest height for an adult.

Around the pool are separate changing rooms for men and women, accessible toilets, a footbath on the way to the pool deck, a first-aid room and spectator seating.

In the council’s timetables, public swimming is called abertura ao público (“open to the public”). The 2026/27 timetable, published on 4 September 2026, has these sessions:

• Weekdays: 12:40 to 13:20 every day, which suits home-educating families. There are also early slots at 8:00 and 8:40 on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, and evening slots between 20:00 and 21:20 on most days. Some of these share the pool with classes, so only part of the water is free.
• Saturday: 10:40 to 12:40 and 15:00 to 17:40, alongside aqua-aerobics and squad training.
• Sunday: 9:20 to 12:40, the longest stretch of the week and the easiest time for a family swim.

Public sessions for the 2026/27 season started from 12 September 2026. The council can close the pool at 72 hours’ notice for works, competitions or staff training, so check the page before a special trip.

The regulations are clear on children:

• Ages 4 to 13 may use public sessions only with an adult aged 18 or over who takes responsibility for them, and with a parent’s authorisation.
• Ages 14 to 17 can swim without an adult, with a parent’s authorisation.
• The timetable key says public sessions are for over-14s, or over-4s with an adult. Under-4s aren’t included, so for babies and toddlers look at the Lavradio classes.

For safety the pool caps numbers: no more than 60 people in the water at once. A lifeguard must be on duty for public swimming, and the lifeguard can lower that limit if conditions call for it.

From the 2025/26 price list, which was still the one linked on the council page when we checked:

• Public swim: €1.95 a session
• Unlimited public swimming: €51.30 a month
• Registration €11.45, renewal €5.70 a season, insurance €3.78 a season
• Replacement access tag €2.58
• Use of the public showers only: €0.60

Regular users get an electronic tag (the regulations call it a TAG) that opens the turnstiles. Ask at reception whether you need one for a single visit. Holders of Barreiro’s municipal youth card (ages 12 to 29) and senior card, people with a disability of 60% or more, and low-income households get 25% off registration and monthly fees, on proof such as the IRS tax return.

At the Barreiro pool the children’s classes are Golfinhos (“dolphins”, ages 7 to 10) and Tubarões (“sharks”, ages 11 to 13). Both run on weekday evenings from about 18:00, twice a week, for €15.05 a month. Age is counted as the age the child will be on 31 December of the season. A swimming teacher leads each class, and the regulations allow one adult into the changing room with a child under 8.

For younger children, the council runs its baby and toddler classes at the Piscina Municipal do Lavradio on Rua D. Luís F. Albuquerque. That pool is 16.6 metres by 8 metres and 1.20 metres deep all the way along, and it has a cafeteria. Its 2026/27 timetable has:

• Natação Bebés (6 months to 4 years): Saturday and Sunday mornings, half-hour sessions from 8:40 to about 13:20
• Sapinhos (“little frogs”, ages 5 and 6) and Golfinhos (7 to 10): weekday afternoons and evenings, plus Saturday afternoon

Lavradio has no public swimming sessions on its 2026/27 timetable, so it’s a place for classes only. New enrolments for 2026/27 opened online on 1 and 2 September, then in person (5 to 7 September for babies, 8 and 9 September for children). Places left over can be filled during the season if there’s space; ask either pool about the waiting list. Classes restarted on 16 September 2026.

The Barreiro regulations are strict about kit, and staff can refuse entry:

• A silicone swim cap for everyone, and it stays on in the water.
• Clean flip-flops used only at the pool, never outdoors.
• A full one-piece swimsuit for women and girls; close-fitting trunks without pockets, or briefs, for men and boys. Bikinis and loose or pocketed shorts are banned.
• A full shower before swimming, and a walk through the footbath.
• No jewellery, creams, oils or make-up.
• No armbands, rubber rings or inflatable mattresses.
• No food on the pool side, and no photos or filming without the pool director’s permission.

Children under 8 may use the changing room of the opposite sex with their parent. Lockers are in the changing rooms and must be left open and empty when you go.

• There’s no toddler-friendly shallow water in the Barreiro pool. For under-4s, book the Lavradio baby classes.
• The weekday lunchtime session is only 40 minutes, and some early and late slots share the pool with lessons.
• The pool shuts on holidays and on competition days such as meets in the Circuito de Natação do Barreiro, the local swimming series.
• Pay by cash or Multibanco card at reception.

Across the Tagus from Barreiro, the Fragata D. Fernando II e Glória in Cacilhas makes a good dry-land outing on another day. Nearer home, the Moinho de Maré da Mourisca tide mill on the Sado shows another way people have used water.

Do children need a swim cap at Barreiro pool?

Yes. The regulations require a silicone cap for every swimmer, and it must stay on in the water. Bring flip-flops too.

Can a toddler swim in the public sessions?

The timetable key sets the public-session minimum at 4 years, with an adult. For babies from 6 months to age 4, the council runs weekend classes at the Lavradio pool.

How much is a swim?

€1.95 a session on the price list linked in September 2026, or €51.30 for a month of unlimited public swims.

When is the best time for a family swim?

Sunday morning, 9:20 to 12:40, is the longest public session of the week. On weekdays, the 12:40 session is open to the public every day.

Can my 12-year-old go on their own?

No. Children up to 13 need an adult aged 18 or over with them. From 14, teenagers can swim alone with a parent’s written authorisation.
