Parque das Gerações

Parque das Gerações (the Park of the Generations) is a free public skatepark on the Estoril coast, between Cascais and Carcavelos. Skaters from all over Lisbon travel here, and it regularly hosts competitions and events. It’s a good place to bring a child who is serious about skating, and it also works for a family with mixed ages, because younger children have their own path away from the concrete.

The park dates from the early 2010s. A local group, the Associação Amigos do Parque das Gerações, helps look after it and runs lessons, workshops, tournaments and community events. The association describes its aim as promoting skate culture and building community through sport.

The association splits the park into three kinds of space. There’s polished concrete for skateboarding, aggressive inline skating and BMX. There are green areas for sitting and socialising. And there’s a separate path for bikes, roller skates, scooters and tricycles, which is the part most toddlers and young scooter riders will use.

On the concrete, the association lists four skating zones:

• The flow bowl, a competition bowl built in 2023 with smooth transitions for carving and airs.
• Praça Mar, a street plaza with rails, ledges, stairs and gaps.
• The snake run and flow area, linked curving sections for riding long continuous lines.
• Stairs and hubbas, technical obstacles for intermediate and advanced skaters.

There’s also a beginner area. Skatelopez, the skatepark builder and guide, says the park mixes street and transition riding in roughly a 60:40 split, can hold 100 to 150 riders at once, and has a reputation for experienced skaters sharing tips with newcomers.

The bowl came out of Cascais’s participatory budget, where residents propose and vote on projects. A local resident, António Cardona, proposed the upgrade, and the council opened it on 11 July 2023 after spending about €300,000. The works added the professional-size concrete bowl, a wooden half-pipe, an outdoor gym and a renewed walking circuit. The council also planned a café and a skate and surf shop.

In 2025 the council said more improvements were on the way, including ramp upgrades, a new mini half-pipe, better lighting and toilets, with a later extension south towards Forte de Salazar. Then, from 10 August to 10 September 2026, the council worked on the green spaces, adding picnic tables, benches, tiered seating and a small stage. The whole park was closed from 20 August to 10 September. Check it has fully reopened, and whether the toilets and café are working, before you set off.

Children who are new to skating should start in the beginner area and stay out of the bowl and the busy street lines, where teenagers and adults ride fast. Little ones on scooters, balance bikes or trikes belong on the separate path, which is meant for them. Older children who can already ride and turn can try the gentler transitions of the snake run at quieter times.

If your child wants proper teaching, the association runs lessons for different levels; contact them for ages, times and prices. Near Lisbon, Manolas Skate School teaches from age 4. Carcavelos Surf School, just along the coast, is an option for children who’d rather try surfing.

• Bring a helmet and pads. Falls on concrete hurt, and the bowl is deep.
• Wait your turn and look before you drop in. Skateparks run on unspoken queues, and a child who wanders into someone’s line can cause a crash.
• The park opens at 07:30 in summer, and an early start usually means more room for a beginner.
• In summer the concrete gets hot, so bring water and sun cream.

• Piscina Oceânica do Tamariz, the seawater pool on the beach in Estoril.
• Parque Marechal Carmona in Cascais, a shady park with peacocks and a playground split by age.
• The Borboletário de Cascais, a butterfly house.
• Santini in Cascais for ice cream.

Is Parque das Gerações free?

Yes. The skatepark is a public space and free to use. The association’s lessons are paid.

Can my child ride a scooter at Parque das Gerações?

Yes. The association says bikes, roller skates, scooters and tricycles use the separate path. Skateboards, inline skates and BMX use the concrete skating areas.
