Piscina Oceânica das Azenhas do Mar

Azenhas do Mar is a small village on the Sintra coast, north of Praia das Maçãs, where the houses are built down the slope of a valley that ends at the sea. Sintra council’s beach page describes it simply: a village on the hillside, a viewpoint (miradouro) built on the cliffs, and an ocean pool (piscina oceânica) at the water’s edge. It says the place is busy in winter as well as summer, because people come for the view.

The ocean pool is a basin of sea water in the rocks below the village. It gives children somewhere to swim that is more sheltered than the open Atlantic, which along this stretch of coast is cold and often rough. It is still the sea, though. Waves reach the pool, conditions change with the tide and the weather, and there is no warm water or learner pool here.

In late August 2025 the harbour authority, the Capitania do Porto de Cascais, banned all bathing in the pool after inspections by Sintra’s public health unit on 20 June and 25 August 2025. The inspectors found serious structural problems. According to the ban as reported by Beachcam, these were a drainage system without proper protection and “an imminent risk of drowning”, worn access steps, no safety barriers on the access quay and poorly maintained support structures.

On 11 May 2026 the Capitania published Edital 29/2026, lifting the ban with immediate effect. It says the repair works and corrective measures reduced the risks and restored the conditions needed for safe bathing. So the pool was open again for the 2026 summer season.

Parents should still read the history as a reason to look before swimming. Check that the steps and barriers are in good order, and that no new notice has been posted at the beach.

Azenhas do Mar is an official bathing beach. The government’s 2026 list of bathing waters (Portaria 204-A/2026/1) gave it a bathing season of 30 May to 13 September, and the Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) records it as lifeguarded in that season, with a first-aid post, toilets, showers, a beach concession and parking. Sintra council’s own beach page doesn’t label it as lifeguarded, so the APA data is the more up-to-date guide.

APA’s profile covers the beach as a whole. Ask the lifeguard when you arrive whether their watch includes the pool, and outside the bathing season assume nobody is on duty. APA also flags a risk of rockfall from the cliffs, so don’t set up under them, and it classifies the water as good, one step below its top grade of excellent.

Storms on this coast are serious. In January 2026 the council closed Praia Grande and Azenhas do Mar from 23 to 25 January because storm Ingrid was bringing waves of 5 to 7 metres, with some up to 12 metres. On days like that the viewpoint above is the place to be, and the pool is off limits.

That makes it a better fit for confident swimmers on calm summer days than for toddlers. Little children can paddle at the edge with an adult in the water beside them, but this is not a baby pool.

The village sits on the coast road north of Colares. Sintra council has extended paid parking in its beach zones, such as Praia Grande and Praia das Maçãs, to the whole year from 1 October 2026. Charges run from 08:00 to 20:00. From May to September they range from €0.45 for 15 minutes to €4 for four hours; from October to April they drop to €0.50 an hour, and the first 15 minutes each day are free.

For a pool with slides, lawns and a children’s pool, the saltwater Praia das Maçãs pools are just down the coast. The Sintra hills are a short drive inland. Convento dos Capuchos and Quinta da Regaleira make a good pairing for a day that mixes the sea with Sintra’s woods and towers. Praia Grande, just south, has dinosaur footprints in its cliffs, according to the council.

Is the Azenhas do Mar ocean pool open?

Yes. The harbour authority lifted the bathing ban on 11 May 2026 after repair works. It had been closed since late August 2025.

Is there a lifeguard at the ocean pool?
