Piscinas da Quinta da Gruta

The Complexo Municipal de Piscinas da Quinta da Gruta is Maia’s summer open-air pool, in Castêlo da Maia, about 15 to 20 minutes’ drive north of central Porto. There are two pools of treated fresh water: a larger one for adults and a smaller one for children. Around them are lawns for lying out between swims, a bar and a restaurant.

What makes it different from an ordinary municipal lido is where it sits. The pools are part of the Quinta da Gruta, an early 20th-century estate with a romantic-style manor house that Maia council now runs as its environmental education centre. So the walk from the car to the water passes gardens, organic vegetable plots and orchards, and there are two tennis courts next to the pools.

Porto Secreto’s 2026 report described it as much calmer than the northern beaches on the hottest days.

The council’s page doesn’t publish pool depths or sizes. What it does say is that the complex is meant for everyone from small children learning to swim to adults who just want to cool off, and that the children’s pool is separate from the main one. That separation is useful with toddlers and preschoolers: they have water of their own without lane swimmers or older children jumping in around them.

If your child is a confident swimmer they’ll use the adult pool too. Ask the staff about depths on arrival, since they aren’t published.

The Quinta da Gruta pools open only in the summer bathing season. In 2026 they reopened on 13 June, and the council’s page gave the hours as every day from 9:00 to 19:00.

There are three kinds of ticket for Maia residents:

• Morning, 9:00 to 14:00
• Afternoon, 14:00 to 19:00
• Full day, 9:00 to 19:00

Non-residents could only buy full-day tickets in 2026. Check the council’s page for the closing date, which isn’t published in advance.

The council’s page links to online sales but doesn’t list prices. Porto Secreto, a Porto news site, published the 2026 price list in July:

For Maia residents (proof of address needed):

• Children aged 3 to 15: €7.68 full day, €3.83 half day
• Adults aged 16 to 59: €9.60 full day, €4.78 half day
• Family price for parents and siblings aged 16 to 59 with a ticket holder: €8.64 full day, €4.30 half day
• Over-60s: €7.68 full day, €3.83 half day

For non-residents, full day only:

• Children aged 3 to 15 and over-60s: €9.60
• Adults aged 16 to 59: €12
• Family price (16 to 59): €10.80

Children under 3 go in free with their citizen card (Cartão de Cidadão) or other ID.

You can buy tickets online through the Maia sports department’s ticket portal, which is the safest option on hot weekends. In person, the council sells them at other municipal sports centres rather than only at the gate: the Águas Santas, Gueifães and Folgosa pools, the municipal tennis complex and the municipal gymnastics complex, each with its own summer opening hours. Águas Santas closes in August.

Tickets, and lounger bookings, are valid only for the day and period you bought, with no exchanges or refunds.

• Everyone wears a wristband, handed out at the entrance.
• Children under 13 must be with an adult.
• You can’t bring parasols, chairs, glass bottles, cool boxes or sound systems.
• Picnics aren’t allowed, so plan to eat at the bar or restaurant.
• Parasols and loungers can’t be booked in advance and go to whoever arrives first.

The council doesn’t publish a swim-cap rule for the outdoor pools; check at the entrance.

The ban on picnics and cool boxes makes a full day more expensive than at the beach, since lunch has to come from the bar or restaurant. A half-day ticket (residents only) gets round this.

Shade is first come, first served. On a hot weekend, arrive when it opens at 9:00 if you want a parasol, and bring hats and sun cream for small children in any case.

Outside the pools, the estate is open to the public as a garden. According to Visit Maia, the gardens open from 9:00 to 21:00 from April to October and 9:00 to 18:00 from November to March. The gardens have a herb area with rosemary, lavender and lemongrass, and big trees including a magnolia, an elm, a tree fern, a lime, a ginkgo and a dawn redwood (metasequoia).

The council’s environmental education team is based in the manor house and runs activities for schools, older people and families, using the organic vegetable gardens, the orchards and the small farm animals kept on the estate. Ask at the centre about family activities during your visit.

The Zoo da Maia is in the same council, a short drive away, and works for a cooler morning before an afternoon swim. For a seawater alternative, the Piscina das Marés in Leça da Palmeira has its own children’s pool on the rocks by the Atlantic. The Parque Aquático de Amarante is the bigger, louder option, with slides and a wave pool.

How much are the Quinta da Gruta pools?

In 2026 a full day cost €9.60 for a child from outside Maia and €12 for an adult. Maia residents paid less, and under-3s went free.

Is there a children’s pool?

Yes. The complex has two pools, one for adults and one for children.

Can you bring a picnic?

No. The 2026 rules banned picnics, cool boxes and glass bottles. There’s a bar and a restaurant.

Can children go on their own?
