Piscinas Municipais da Granja

The Piscinas Municipais da Granja sit on the seafront of Granja beach, in Arcozelo at the southern end of Vila Nova de Gaia. There are two pools, and both are filled with seawater: an outdoor pool that opens in the summer, and a semi-covered pool built in 2000 that’s used all year for lessons and fitness classes.

Gaia council reopened the complex at the start of June 2026 after renovation works. Porto Secreto, which covered the reopening, reported that more than a hundred children and young people took part in the opening activities, with water aerobics and water games led by swimming teachers.

For families, the outdoor pool is the draw. You get the smell of the ocean and a view straight out to sea, with a lifeguard watching and no waves to knock a small child over. The complex also has its own playground, a bar and a terrace.

The outdoor pool (piscina descoberta) opens only in the warm months. The council’s regulations set the season as June to September, with the exact dates fixed each year.

It has a main pool and a separate children’s pool (piscina infantil). The regulations reserve the children’s pool for younger children: anyone over 12 can only be in it when they’re looking after a small child. That keeps it calmer for toddlers and preschoolers.

Every paid entry includes a sun lounger, though the council doesn’t promise that a family’s loungers will be next to each other, and you can’t reserve them or move them around. Babies and children up to 2 go in free, with proof of age, but don’t get a lounger. The pool holds a maximum of 300 people, and entry stops when it’s full.

Day tickets are sold at the outside ticket office, first come, first served. You then queue for the turnstile, and staff fit a wristband that you wear all day. You can leave for a while and come back if you sign out at the desk. The council’s online pools portal also sells tickets for the outdoor pool.

For regular visitors there are multi-day wristbands, valid for a week, a fortnight or a month, each covering full days.

The regulations divide outdoor pool users into babies (3 months to 2 years, free), children (3 to 17), adults (18 and over) and seniors (65 and over, reduced price with ID). Gaia’s price list is hosted on the council website, which we couldn’t reach when checking in September 2026, so ask at the ticket office or email the pools team.

These come from the council’s pool regulations:

• Swimsuits, bikinis or swim shorts without pockets only; no other clothes or shoes in the water.
• Shower and use the footbath before getting in.
• Babies must wear swim nappies.
• No diving, running, pushing or ball games.
• No inflatables, rings, floats, flippers or snorkels, except in authorised activities. Check with the lifeguards what’s allowed for a child who needs buoyancy help.
• No food or drink brought in, except meals made for children under 6.
• No creams or make-up in the water, which in practice means applying sun cream well before a swim.
• Everyone must be out of the water 30 minutes before closing.

There’s a cloakroom where you hang your things on a numbered hanger and wear a matching wristband.

The semi-covered pool is 25 metres long and 16.6 metres wide, with eight lanes and a roof that partly opens on hot days. It’s the base for Gaia’s swimming school at Granja.

Under the council’s regulations, children are grouped by age for lessons:

• Babies, 3 to 35 months, in the water with a parent. At Granja these classes run at weekends.
• Children aged 3 to 5 (adaptação, getting used to the water)
• Children aged 6 to 15 (iniciação and upwards)

Children’s classes are 40 minutes, mostly on weekday afternoons from about 15:50 and on Saturdays. New pupils who need a level assessment take one with a teacher before they’re placed.

For 2026/27, renewals opened in July, new baby enrolments from 28 July, 3 to 5-year-olds from 30 July, 6-year-olds and up from 11 August, and pupils who need assessing from 13 August, through the council’s pools portal.

One rule surprises parents. In Gaia’s covered and semi-covered pools, the minimum age for free swimming (natação livre) is 13. Younger children can only swim there in classes, so for a family swim with young children the outdoor pool in summer is the option.

The covered pools in Gaia close over Christmas, at Easter, on public holidays and in August, when at least one council pool stays open. The outdoor pool can close fully or partly in bad weather.

The ban on outside food means lunch is from the bar, apart from food for under-6s. Bring hats and sun cream for the loungers, since shade isn’t mentioned in the council’s information.

Inland in Gaia, the Parque Biológico de Gaia has trails and native animals for a cooler morning. Nearer the river, the Teleférico de Gaia cable car runs over the port wine lodges. North of Porto, the Piscina das Marés in Leça is another seawater pool with a children’s pool.

Is there a baby or toddler pool at Granja?

Yes. The outdoor complex has a children’s pool, and over-12s can only use it when looking after a young child.

Is the water really seawater?

Yes. Both the outdoor pool and the semi-covered pool are filled with seawater.

How much is the Granja pool?

The council didn’t publish current prices anywhere we could open in September 2026. Under-3s go free, and each paid ticket includes a lounger.

Can younger children swim in the indoor pool?

Only in lessons. Gaia’s regulations set 13 as the minimum age for free swimming in its covered and semi-covered pools.

Can you take a picnic?

No. Only meals for children under 6 can be brought in; there’s a bar on site.
