Praia de Buarcos

Figueira da Foz’s seafront runs north from the mouth of the River Mondego. Buarcos is at the northern end, an old fishing town at the foot of the Serra da Boa Viagem hills. Its beach, Praia de Buarcos, is the town’s front garden: lifeguards in summer, cafés across the road, and the hills and the Cabo Mondego headland closing off the view to the north.

For families it’s one of the easiest beaches in the area. You can park, walk onto the sand without steps, find a toilet and an ice cream, and still have space to spread out.

The Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA) describes Buarcos as a busy urban beach on an exposed stretch of Atlantic coast north of the Mondego mouth, facing an energetic ocean. That means waves and cold water, even though the bay looks more sheltered than the huge flat beach further south in Figueira. Small children can dig and paddle at the edge with an adult, and older children who swim well can play in the waves inside the flagged zone.

The Figueira da Foz beach code of conduct adds a few sensible rules: stay within sight of your children at all times, avoid swimming in areas used by surfers, swim parallel to the shore, go in gradually to avoid cold shock, and keep out of the midday sun between 11:00 and 16:00.

In 2026 the bathing season in Figueira da Foz ran from 13 June to 13 September. The council hired 53 lifeguards and three coordinators, supported by four quad bikes, to cover 13 beaches from Quiaios to Leirosa, Buarcos among them. The Diário de Coimbra reported at the end of the season that there had been no deaths on the supervised beaches, and the rescue teams reminded families that the sea stays dangerous after the lifeguards go home.

The flags follow the national system. Green means good conditions for swimming, yellow means take care (paddling only, no swimming), red means danger, where even standing close to the water can be risky, and chequered means the beach is temporarily without lifeguards. A striped flag marks the safest bathing area.

Buarcos is one of ten Figueira da Foz beaches with a Blue Flag in 2026, which the council says is the most of any municipality in the Centro region. The APA classifies the water as Excellent, and its 2026 profile records no short-term pollution episodes in the 2025 season.

Buarcos is on the council’s 2026 accessible beach list (Praia Acessível), with level access to the sand and reserved parking spaces for disabled drivers. The APA lists an amphibious chair for getting into the water. Level access makes it one of the better choices around here with a buggy, at least as far as the edge of the soft sand.

The APA’s beach data lists a first-aid post, toilets, showers, beach bars and other support services, and parking.

Animals are not allowed in the lifeguarded or concession areas during the bathing season, except guide dogs, according to the council’s beach code of conduct.

Right on the seafront, the council’s Complexo Desportivo da Praia de Buarcos is a handy answer to “I’m bored of the beach”. The 18-hole mini-golf course was free during its trial period in 2026: you turn up at the support building, leave an ID document, and get clubs and balls in exchange. There’s also a pitch and putt course (€5 a round, clubs and balls included), a driving range (€5 for 50 balls or €10 for 100) and padel courts, which must be booked and paid for in advance.

In the high season, from 1 June to 30 September, the mini-golf, pitch and putt and driving range are open from 08:00 to 20:00. Food, pets and bikes aren’t allowed inside the sports areas.

A long, flat promenade follows the beach from Buarcos south into Figueira da Foz, good for scooters, buggies and tired grandparents. The Serra da Boa Viagem rises behind the town, and the road north climbs towards the Cabo Mondego headland.

Just up the coast road, Cabo Mondego is a headland where the rock layers hold dinosaur footprints and fossils. On colder or windier days, Figueira da Foz’s free heated seawater pools sit right on the sand further along the seafront. For a quieter beach village with wooden fishermen’s huts, head north to Praia da Tocha.
