Praia Fluvial da Lapa dos Dinheiros

The Praia Fluvial da Lapa dos Dinheiros is a river beach in the village of the same name, in Seia municipality. It sits on the Ribeira da Caniça, a mountain stream that feeds the River Alva, at about 700 metres above sea level on the south-west side of the Serra da Estrela, inside the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.

Seia’s tourism site describes a mountain setting dominated by the souto da Lapa, a grove of chestnut trees, some of them centuries old, and big outcrops of granite. The valley is steep and rugged, so near the beach the stream drops over a series of small waterfalls. The chestnut grove is also rich in wildlife, and on a hot afternoon it gives welcome shade.

The APA’s bathing water profile adds a detail children may like: the Ribeira da Caniça here flows from below the dam of the Lagoa Comprida, the big reservoir up on the plateau of the Serra da Estrela.

It is one of Seia’s two Blue Flag river beaches. The other, Loriga, is further along the EN231, in a glacial valley.

Visit Seia describes clear water in a still pool (espelho de água, literally a water mirror) that’s very inviting for a swim. Being mountain water, it stays fresh even in August, so have a warm towel ready for small children.

With granite all around, expect rocks at the edge rather than a wide sandy beach. Wet granite can be slippery, so water shoes help, and toddlers need a hand. The lifeguard is on duty from 10:30 to 18:30 during the season, and that’s the time to swim.

The APA classes the water as Excellent and recorded no pollution days in 2025. Its profile names litter from beach users and big crowds as the main pressures on the water, and rates algae blooms as likely, which is common in pools on mountain streams in hot weather. Any warning is posted at the beach and on the APA’s InfoÁgua site.

This is what makes Lapa dos Dinheiros different from most river beaches. Visit Seia says a footpath starts at the bridge and leads to the Buraco da Moura and to a viewpoint over the waterfalls of the Caniça.

The Buraco da Moura is a natural cave system made by landslides. Huge granite blocks slid down the slope and piled up on top of each other, and the gaps between them formed a complicated network of chambers and passages. For a child who loves caves or climbing, that’s a proper adventure after a swim.

We couldn’t find an official length or difficulty for the path, so wear proper shoes rather than flip-flops and keep small children close near the waterfalls and among the boulders. A torch is handy for peering into the darker gaps.

The official bathing season at Lapa dos Dinheiros ran from 1 July to 31 August 2026, with a lifeguard daily from 10:30 to 18:30. There’s a first-aid post on site. Outside those dates and hours nobody is watching the water.

The beach held three flags in 2026: the Blue Flag (Bandeira Azul), the Gold Quality award from the conservation group Quercus for five straight seasons of excellent water, and the Praia Acessível (accessible beach) flag. They were raised at a ceremony on 5 July 2026.

Seia council lists changing rooms, toilets, a first-aid post and a bar. The APA adds showers and parking. There’s no playground listed, so the rocks and the cave walk are the entertainment.

As a Praia Acessível, the beach is set up so people with limited mobility can use it safely and with some independence, and the APA lists an amphibious chair (a floating wheelchair for getting into the water with help). Ask the lifeguard about it when you arrive. The cave path is a different matter: expect uneven ground.

From Seia, follow the EN231 to São Romão. From São Romão, climb about 5 km towards Loriga and Lapa until you see the sign for Lapa dos Dinheiros on the left, then follow the beach signs through the village. The last stretch is a mountain road with bends, so allow time if anyone gets carsick. We couldn’t find a bus to recommend, so plan to drive.

• The water is cold, as you’d expect from a mountain stream.
• Rocks and granite rather than a sandy beach, so children who want sandcastles may be disappointed.
• The lifeguard is only there in July and August.
• The cave path is rough ground: not one for buggies.

Pair the beach with Loriga for a second swim, or head back to Seia for the Museu do Pão, a bread museum with lots for children, and the Museu Natural da Eletricidade, which explains how the mountain’s water was used to make electricity. Seia also has a playground in the municipal park, and near Gouveia, CERVAS cares for injured wild animals.

Is Lapa dos Dinheiros river beach good for toddlers?

It’s a calm pool with a lifeguard in July and August, but the water is cold and the edges are rocky. Toddlers who don’t mind a chilly paddle will be fine with an adult beside them.
