Praia Fluvial de Loriga

The Praia Fluvial de Loriga is a river beach on the Ribeira de Loriga, a stream that rises on the high plateau of the Serra da Estrela and runs down the south-west side of the mountain. It sits about 1 km beyond the village of Loriga, in the municipality of Seia, at roughly 770 to 800 metres above sea level and inside the Serra da Estrela Natural Park.

What makes it different from most Portuguese river beaches is the setting. The Centro de Portugal tourism board describes it as the only river beach in Portugal inside a glacial valley. Thousands of years ago a glacier ground its way down this valley, and Seia’s tourism site points out that you can still see the marks it left. For children, that means a swim surrounded by big granite boulders and steep mountain slopes, which feels very different from a sandy seaside beach.

It is also one of the best-known river beaches in the country. In 2026 it won the Cinco Estrelas Regiões consumer award for beaches in Guarda district, and it came second out of 216 in the public vote run by the Guia das Praias Fluviais.

The stream spreads into a series of clear pools among the rocks. The tourism board says many of these natural pools are shallow and suit children well, so toddlers can sit and splash while older children explore further out. The same page is frank about the temperature: the water is crystal clear and icy, which is what you’d expect from a stream coming off the Serra da Estrela. Expect small children to go in and out quickly, and bring a warm towel even on a hot day.

The rocks around the pools are part of the fun, and they’re also the thing to watch. Granite in and around moving water can be slippery, so water shoes help and a toddler needs a hand at all times.

The APA (the Portuguese Environment Agency) classed the water as Excellent in 2025, and it had no pollution days that season. Like all designated bathing waters, it is tested during the season, and any warning is posted on site and on the APA’s InfoÁgua site.

The official bathing season at Loriga ran from 1 July to 31 August 2026. During the season a lifeguard is on duty, and Visit Seia gives the hours as 10:30 to 18:30. There’s a first-aid post on site. Outside those dates and hours nobody is watching the water, so swimming then is at your own risk.

Loriga flew the Blue Flag (Bandeira Azul) again in 2026, along with the Gold Quality award from the conservation group Quercus, given to bathing waters rated excellent for five seasons in a row, and the Praia Acessível (accessible beach) flag.

Seia council lists changing rooms, toilets, a first-aid post, a bar, a picnic area under the trees and a playground, with the tourist office nearby. The tourism board adds bike parking, a car park and a terrace at the bar. The playground is a useful backup for children who get cold quickly and want to play on dry land for a while.

For wheelchair users and anyone with limited mobility, the Praia Acessível status means the beach is set up for access, and the APA lists an amphibious chair (a floating wheelchair that can go into the water). In July 2026 the council said it plans further work to improve access to the bathing area, to be done after the season ends, so the layout may change a little before summer 2027.

From Seia, follow the EN231 south-west through São Romão to Loriga, about 17 km, then continue about 1 km along the EN231 towards Alvoco da Serra. The last part is a mountain road with bends, so allow extra time if anyone gets carsick. There’s parking at the beach. We couldn’t find a bus service to recommend, so plan on driving.

• It gets busy. When the APA president visited in July 2026, he said he was struck by how many people were there. Summer weekends in the Serra da Estrela are popular, so arriving in the morning makes sense.
• The water is very cold. Lovely on a 35°C day, a shock for some small children.
• Rocks, not sand. There’s grass to sit on, but children who want to dig sandcastles may be disappointed.
• Short season. The lifeguard is only there in July and August.

Loriga is known for the terraces on the valley sides and the irrigation channels built over centuries, which Seia’s tourism site describes as part of the village’s heritage. Walkers can follow the Rota da Garganta de Loriga trail up the valley.

Back towards Seia, the Museu do Pão is a bread museum with plenty for children, and the Museu Natural da Eletricidade explains how the mountain’s water was used to make electricity. Near Gouveia, CERVAS is a wildlife rescue centre. If you want a second river beach in the Serra da Estrela, the Praia Fluvial de Valhelhas on the Zêzere, on the Guarda side of the mountain, has lawns on both banks joined by a footbridge. Seia’s other Blue Flag river beach, Lapa dos Dinheiros, is also on the Seia side.
