Praia Fluvial de Valhelhas

The Praia Fluvial de Valhelhas is a river beach on the Zêzere, in the village of Valhelhas, about 23 km from the city of Guarda. It sits inside the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, where the village’s parish council describes it as lying in a valley on the left bank of the river, surrounded by green hills that rise towards the mountain.

In September 2026 it was voted Praia Fluvial do Ano 2026 (river beach of the year) in the public vote run by the Guia das Praias Fluviais, ahead of Loriga in second place. There were 216 river beaches and bathing spots in the running.

It’s a very different place from Loriga’s granite pools. Valhelhas is a large leisure area built around a calm stretch of river, with grass, trees and play space on both banks. That makes it an easy place to spend a whole day with children of different ages.

The Zêzere rises in the Serra da Estrela, and at Valhelhas it runs through a green, sunny valley. Guarda council describes the water as clear and calm. Beira Alta TV’s report lists a ramp giving access into the water, which is handy for small children and anyone who struggles with steps.

The water comes down from the mountain, so expect it to feel fresh. The APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) classes the bathing water as Excellent, and its official profile says there’s no history of short-term pollution and no significant pollution sources nearby.

The official 2026 bathing season at Valhelhas ran from 1 July to 31 August, and the council lists lifeguard cover and a first-aid post. Outside those dates the beach is still open, but nobody is watching the water.

Valhelhas is on the ABAAE’s 2026 Blue Flag (Bandeira Azul) list, and Guarda council says it has held the flag for 18 years in a row. It also has the Quercus Gold Quality award for water quality, and it has been a Praia Acessível (accessible beach) since 2007.

This is where Valhelhas does well for families. Guarda council lists:

• a picnic park with tables, barbecue areas and water points
• wide lawns and natural shade on both sides of the river, linked by a footbridge
• a playground
• a games pitch, with Beira Alta TV mentioning volleyball and football
• bars with terraces
• toilets, changing rooms and a first-aid post
• a campsite and a motorhome park
• a car park

The parish council adds that on some summer weekends the evening carries on with live music, which draws a crowd. Worth knowing if you’re camping with small children who go to bed early.

Valhelhas has been a Praia Acessível since 2007, and it has an amphibious chair, a floating wheelchair that lets people with reduced mobility get into the water safely. The footbridge and lawns make it easy to move between the two banks, though grass is always harder work with a buggy than a path.

Most families drive. There’s a car park at the beach, and the APA’s profile warns that the beach gets very busy in summer, so arrive early on hot weekends.

If you’re staying in Guarda without a car, the council ran a free bus to the river beaches from 15 June to 28 August 2026, Monday to Friday, going to a different beach each day. Wednesdays were Valhelhas day. The bus left Guarda’s Centro Coordenador de Transportes at 14:00 and came back from the beach at 18:00, reaching the city at about 18:30. The same scheme ran to Aldeia Viçosa on Thursdays. Check whether it runs again in 2027 before relying on it.

The APA’s own profile calls the beach very busy in summer, and winning a national vote in 2026 is unlikely to make it quieter. Its InfoÁgua page flagged works in progress during the 2026 season, and Guarda council has spoken about repairing damage from recent storms, so some areas may look different from photos. Evening music on summer weekends won’t suit everyone.

Guarda city has the Parque Urbano do Rio Diz and an indoor option at the Piscinas Municipais da Guarda if the weather turns. Covilhã, on the other side of the mountain, has its lifts and funiculars, which children enjoy riding for their own sake. For a second, smaller river beach with a pool and waterslide, head to Aldeia Viçosa on the Mondego.

Is Valhelhas good for toddlers?

It suits them well: calm water, lots of grass, shade, a playground and a lifeguard in July and August. Toddlers still need an adult in the water with them.
