Praia Fluvial de Aldeia Viçosa

The Praia Fluvial de Aldeia Viçosa is a river beach on the right bank of the Mondego, about 22 km from the city of Guarda, inside the Serra da Estrela Natural Park. The APA’s profile places it downstream of the Caldeirão dam, in a rural setting with a set of facilities built around the natural river bank.

What sets it apart from most river beaches in the area is the pool. Next to the river there’s a pool 14 metres long with a waterslide 5 metres high and 28 metres long, according to Guarda council. For children who find a river a bit dull after twenty minutes, that slide can make the day.

In the 2026 public vote for the Guia das Praias Fluviais, Aldeia Viçosa came 12th out of 216 river beaches in the country, behind its neighbour Valhelhas, which won.

• Swim or paddle in the Mondego, where the council describes an area of lawn and sunbathing space by the water.
• Go down the waterslide into the pool.
• Take out a pedal boat (gaivota) on the river.
• Use the playground and the games pitch.
• Picnic in the shade: the council describes the beach as surrounded by trees.

The tourism board also mentions level boardwalks, which make it easier to get around with small children.

This needs a clear answer, because the sources differ. Guarda council’s page says the beach is lifeguarded and lists a lifeguard and a first-aid post, and the tourism board says the same. However, in the government’s official list of bathing waters for 2026 (Portaria 204-A/2026/1), Aldeia Viçosa is listed as a bathing water from 1 July to 31 August but not as a praia de banhos, the category for beaches where lifeguard cover is guaranteed. The Portaria explains that bathing waters without that label are the ones where lifeguard cover was not assured when it was published in April. The APA’s beach data for 2026 also shows no lifeguard.

So check when you arrive whether a lifeguard is on duty, and treat the river and pool as unsupervised if not. The pool and slide are where children will want to be, so an adult should stay close.

The APA tests the water during the bathing season and classes Aldeia Viçosa as Good. Its official profile had no days of bathing advice against in 2025 but lists some possible sources of pollution, including farming and household run-off upstream, lots of visitors and releases from the dam above. The APA also rates algae growth as likely here. Any warning is posted on site and on the APA’s InfoÁgua website, so check before a swim if the water looks cloudy or green.

Guarda council lists a picnic park, toilets, a bar, barbecue areas, washing-up sinks, a playground, a games pitch, the pool and slide, pedal boats, a first-aid post, a car park and bathing access for people with reduced mobility. The APA adds showers and changing rooms. The tourism board describes it as an accessible beach, though it doesn’t appear on the APA’s 2026 accessible list, so wheelchair users may want to phone the council first.

Most visitors drive from Guarda. There’s a car park at the beach.

Without a car, Guarda council ran a free bus from 15 June to 28 August 2026, Monday to Friday, going to a different river beach each day. Thursdays were for Aldeia Viçosa. The bus left the Centro Coordenador de Transportes in Guarda at 14:00, came back from the beach at 18:00 and reached the city at about 18:30. Check whether it runs again next summer before planning around it.

The tourism board pairs the beach with the Passadiços do Mondego, a 12 km boardwalk route that starts at the nearby mountain village of Videmonte and follows the Mondego and two of its tributaries, the Ribeiro do Barrocal and the Rio Caldeirão. The full route is a long walk for young children, so pick a short stretch and finish with a swim.

The lifeguard situation is unclear for 2026, so don’t assume cover. The water quality is classed Good rather than Excellent, and the APA lists the dam upstream as a possible influence on it. Toddlers get less out of this beach than older children, since the main attraction is a slide built for bigger ones.

Valhelhas, on the Zêzere, is the bigger, better-equipped river beach in the same municipality, with a lifeguard in July and August. In Guarda itself, the Parque Urbano do Rio Diz is a good run-around stop, and the Piscinas Municipais da Guarda are there on a cooler day. Further into the mountain, Loriga has rock pools in a glacial valley.

Is Aldeia Viçosa good for young children?

Primary-age children tend to get the most out of it because of the pool and slide. Toddlers can paddle and use the playground, but keep them within arm’s reach.

Is there a lifeguard?

The council says so, but the official 2026 list didn’t guarantee one. Check on arrival.
