Complexo Desportivo da Rodovia

The Complexo Desportivo da Rodovia is Braga’s main council sports complex, a long strip of pools, pitches, paths and play areas beside the River Este. Families come for two things. The council pools (Piscinas Municipais da Rodovia) have outdoor pools that open every day in summer and two heated indoor pools for the rest of the year. Along the river, the free outdoor park, the Parque Desportivo da Rodovia, has a big concrete skate park, a climbing wall, street-workout bars and a children’s playground.

The Câmara Municipal de Braga runs it all directly, so pool prices come from the council’s price table rather than a private operator. That keeps them cheap: an evening swim in August cost €1 in 2026, and children under 6 go free with an adult. The skate park and playground cost nothing, so a swim and a skate can go in one trip.

Braga’s three summer pool complexes, at Rodovia, at Ponte and at Parretas, opened for the 2026 season on Saturday 27 June. They were open every day from 10:00 to 19:30. Before opening, all three had maintenance and repair work in May and June. The councillor responsible told local radio there would always be lifeguards (nadadores-salvadores) on duty, with private security and access control at the gates.

During the heatwave in early July 2026, the council made entry to all three free from Friday to Sunday, up to each pool’s capacity. In a very hot spell, check the council’s news before you pay.

Summer prices and the cheap late-afternoon rate

The outdoor price drops through the day, so an after-school or after-work swim costs a fraction of a morning one. The council revised its 2026 prices for the outdoor pools in July 2026 (edital ED/587/2026):

• Before 15:00: €3, or €27 for a book of 10
• 15:00 to 17:00: €1.50, or €13 for 10
• After 17:00: €1, or €9 for 10
• Children up to and including age 6, with an adult: free

June news reports quoted slightly higher figures (€3.05 and €1.55), so the price at the gate may differ by a few cents.

There’s a 50% discount, not combined with other discounts, for holders of Braga’s municipal cards (Braga Kid, Cartão Jovem and Cartão Sénior), for one parent’s ticket in families with two or more children, and for one or both parents in large families with a cartão de família numerosa. You can hire a sun lounger or a parasol for €1.50 before 15:00 and €1 after.

The two indoor pools, one 25 by 17 metres and a smaller one 25 by 8 metres, have their own weekly timetables, and the council publishes new ones for each season. The 2026/27 grids are PDFs linked from the council’s pool timetables page.

The big pool (25×17 m) opens from 7:15 on some weekdays. It has long runs of public swimming (horário livre) through the morning and middle of the day, often with some lanes shared with University of Minho, Sporting de Braga or triathlon club sessions. Saturday is mostly public swimming, and there is a public slot on Sunday morning.

The small pool (25×8 m) is busy with senior swimming and hydrotherapy classes on weekday mornings. It has public swimming in the late afternoon and early evening on several weekdays, and again on Saturday.

Both pools close in short blocks for cleaning (limpeza) during the day, marked on the timetables. Because the slots change from day to day, look at the PDF for your day rather than assuming a time works every day.

The council’s 2026 price table set public swimming in the heated pools at €2.05 a visit, or €16.35 for a book of 10. As outdoors, children up to 6 go in free with an adult, and the same 50% discounts apply for municipal card holders and families.

The council’s swimming schools (escolas de natação) teach children from 6 years old, starting with getting used to the water and moving on to strokes. On the council’s page the swimming school runs at the Piscina Municipal de Maximinos, another council pool in the city, and you enrol at the Balcão Único, the council’s service desk. The 2026 prices were €9.20 a month for children up to 15 swimming once a week, €18.40 for twice a week, and €25.55 a month for baby swimming (natação bebés). Classes only open with at least 10 pupils. Siblings get 10% off the monthly fee from the second child, if you show your IRS (tax) return.

Baby swimming runs at weekends in the Rodovia small pool on the 2026/27 timetable, in half-hour sessions from 9:15.

In 2018 the council spent €3 million making the outdoor park almost half as big again. It added changing rooms, beach volleyball and beach football courts, a maintenance circuit of about 1,000 metres, fitness equipment, an exercise park for older people, bridges for walkers and cyclists over the river, and a zone for action sports that Visit Braga calls the Parque Radical da Rodovia.

The skate park covers about 1,600 square metres and is built in concrete. A|Park, the company that built it, calls it one of the largest skate parks in Portugal. Its centrepiece is a bowl, a deep rounded basin that experienced skaters ride around like a wave. Around it is a street area with handrails of different heights, lots of curbs, quarter pipes of different heights, banks, a euro gap (a gap to jump across onto a ramp), a manual pad (a low box for balancing on two wheels) and a pyramid.

A|Park says it has options for every level. For a young beginner that means the flat areas, the lowest curbs and the smaller banks, well away from the bowl. Visit Braga lists skateboards, BMX and skates as the sports it’s for; the council hasn’t published a rule on scooters, so ride considerately and follow any signs.

Each July the park hosts the Braga Skate Open, part of the council’s Festival da Juventude. In 2025 the festival ran from 4 to 6 July, with free entry, the skate contest over the weekend, breakdancing, music and street food. It’s a fun time to watch, though a busy one to learn.

Next to the skate park are a climbing wall and a street-workout park with bars for pull-ups and other bodyweight exercises. The council hasn’t published rules on who can use the climbing wall or whether ropes are provided, so treat it as something for clubs and experienced climbers unless you find a class or an event.

For younger children there’s the playground, which the council built into the 2018 works so the park would serve every age. The council doesn’t describe its equipment, so check on arrival what suits a toddler.

Babies can start with the weekend baby-swimming classes. Toddlers get the playground, the flat riverside paths for a buggy or balance bike, and free entry to the pools with an adult. Children of 4 to 7 can scoot along the paths and try the flattest parts of the skate park when it’s quiet. Children of 8 to 12 on skateboards, scooters and BMX bikes will find enough low obstacles to progress for a long time. Teenagers can take on the bowl and the rails, try the street-workout bars and watch the Braga Skate Open in July.

The council’s pages don’t publish a full set of pool rules, so check the rules at the entrance. Most Portuguese public pools require a swim cap (touca) and a shower before you get in, and indoor pools usually expect flip-flops on the poolside, so pack them anyway.

Summer weekends are crowded, and the outdoor pools stop letting people in once they reach capacity. The cheap rate after 17:00 is also the busiest time on hot days, and the pools close at 19:30.

The council hasn’t published rules for the skate park, including whether helmets are compulsory. Helmets are a good idea for every child, and pads help beginners on concrete. Keep young riders out of the bowl unless they know how to drop in, and teach them to wait their turn. The skate park is busiest with older riders after school, in the evenings and at weekends, and the concrete gets hot in summer, so bring water and hats.

Piscina da Ponte, in the Parque de São João da Ponte, is an outdoor summer pool. The council’s page gives its season as roughly 1 July to 31 August, but in 2026 it opened with Rodovia on 27 June. Parretas is the third summer pool complex, with the same prices and hours as Rodovia in 2026. Maximinos and Tebosa are indoor pools with their own timetables on the council’s page.

A morning at the Bom Jesus do Monte, with its water-powered funicular and long staircase, pairs well with an afternoon swim once the price drops. In Guimarães, 25 minutes away, the Scorpio outdoor pools have slides and a splash zone. The Museu de Olaria in Barcelos is a good rainy-day alternative, and in Ponte de Lima the pony school at Quinta de Pentieiros has riding for younger children.
