Museu dos Bombeiros de Leça da Palmeira

The Museu dos Bombeiros (firefighters’ museum) in Leça da Palmeira belongs to the Associação Humanitária dos Bombeiros Voluntários de Matosinhos-Leça, the volunteer fire brigade that covers Matosinhos and Leça. The brigade is more than 150 years old, and its museum is one of the oldest in the borough: it was founded in 1943 and moved into its current hall in the fire station in 1973.

Because it is part of a working station, you are visiting while the brigade carries on around you. The brigade’s website in 2026 was still full of callouts, rescues and training, and it asks museum visitors to book. That is the first thing to know: phone before you go.

The council describes more than 800 pieces on display in a large hall, arranged in three parts.

The heart of the museum is the equipment the brigade used in its early days, from the last quarter of the 19th century. That includes fire carts that were pulled by animals and others pulled by the firefighters themselves, early motor pumps, fire extinguishers and signal rockets. For a child, the jump from a cart pulled by hand to a machine with its own motor is the story of the whole room.

The second part is about rescue. Firefighters here saved people from fires and from the sea, and the museum keeps objects recovered from both, including lifebuoys and ships’ wheels from vessels wrecked off Leixões, the big port next door.

The third part shows the power of fire itself: pieces of metal twisted and deformed by flames. It is a clear, quiet way of showing a child how hot a fire gets without any scary pictures.

The brigade also displays the medals and decorations it has received for its humanitarian work.

The Matosinhos museum network listed a workshop called “Uma Medalha Merecida” (A Well-Deserved Medal) for children aged 6 to 12. Children learn about the work of firefighters and then make their own medal from recycled materials. It had to be booked at least a week ahead through the council’s museum network (229 390 967, redemuseus@cm-matosinhos.pt). That listing dates from 2018, so ask whether it still runs. It would suit a homeschool group well. Parents stay with their children: nothing we read describes it as a drop-off session.

Little children aged four to seven will enjoy seeing real firefighters’ carts and kit up close and knowing they are in a real fire station. The visit is short enough for them.

Children aged eight to twelve can follow the change from muscle power to motor power, look at how a pump pushes water, and connect the shipwreck relics to the port they can see from the seafront.

Teenagers interested in local history or emergency services will get most from a guided visit, which the council says could be arranged in advance.

The council’s museum page lists free entry, with guided visits by appointment and opening from Monday to Friday, 09:30 to 12:30 and 14:30 to 17:00. That page was last updated in October 2018, so treat the hours as a guide. The pages we checked say nothing about step-free access, toilets or baby changing. Ask when you book if you are bringing a buggy or wheelchair.

The fire station is on Avenida Dr. Antunes Guimarães in Leça da Palmeira, north of the Leixões port. The council lists STCP bus 507 and the Resende buses 105, 106 and 120. It also lists Metro line A to Mercado, which is on the Matosinhos side of the harbour, so expect a walk across the bridge from there.

The museum only takes an hour, so pair it with something nearby. The Farol de Leça lighthouse is also in Leça da Palmeira, and the Leixões cruise terminal is on the same port, Leixões, where the wrecked ships in the museum came to grief offshore. Children who like the sea can try a lesson at Surfing Life Club in Matosinhos, and Camelot Park is a family place to eat in the borough. Further north, the firefighters’ museum in Valença has helmets from around the world and hand pumps from 1787 and 1854.
