Parque Urbano das Piscinas

The Parque Urbano das Piscinas (Pools Urban Park) is a green park on the Rua Cidade Ponta Delgada in Montijo, right next to the town’s municipal swimming pools. The council gives its area as about 16,450 square metres. It is a simple, local park, and what makes it worth a detour for families is the combination of a playground, a skating rink and a minigolf course in one place.

The minigolf course is the park’s most unusual feature. The council says it was designed with holes of different levels and degrees of difficulty, so that it stays interesting for players of all ages. Small children can knock a ball along the easy holes while older children try to beat their parents’ score on the harder ones.

The council’s minigolf page says clubs and balls are borrowed from the reception (secretaria) of the municipal pool next door. When we checked in September 2026, though, the council listed that indoor pool as temporarily closed, so the usual place to collect the clubs may not be staffed. Phone or email the pool’s contacts or ask the council where to get them before you go. The council lists the minigolf hours as:

• Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 21:00
• Saturday, 09:00 to 12:30

No Sunday hours are listed, and the council doesn’t publish a price for borrowing the equipment, so check first if you’re making a special trip.

Minigolf has a learning side too. Children practise judging distance, angles and force, and keeping score is easy maths practice.

The park has a playground (parque infantil) for younger children. A local guide describes it as a play area for the little ones, and the council lists it among the park’s main uses along with walks and sport. The council doesn’t describe the equipment, so don’t expect a big adventure playground.

There are two rinks:

• a roller-skating rink (ringue de patinagem), a smooth, flat surface that suits children learning to roller-skate or practising on inline skates
• a multi-sport rink (ringue para diversos desportos) for ball games

The Montijo On City guide also mentions tennis courts and long boardwalks for a walk at the end of the day.

The council lists the park’s notable trees: plane trees, cork oaks, pines and a coral tree (Erythrina crista-galli), which it calls “vistosa”, meaning showy. The coral tree has bright red flowers in the warmer months, so children can hunt for the red tree among the green ones.

If you’re exploring Montijo, the same local guide lists a few more green spaces with play areas. The Parque Municipal in the town centre dates from 1929, covers 3.5 hectares and has a playground and the Domus Bar for an ice cream. The Jardim do Parque do Saldanha, by the historic Quinta do Saldanha and its chapel, has what the guide calls a famous red pyramid for climbing, and welcomes dogs.

This is a neighbourhood park rather than a big destination, and the council gives no detail on the playground equipment or shade. Minigolf isn’t available on Sunday according to the published hours. There’s no café listed in the park itself, so bring snacks.

Montijo has some bigger outings for children who like engines: KartMontijo runs karting at Alto Estanqueiro, and MX Spot in Pegões is a motocross track. The Museu Agrícola da Atalaia is a free farm museum where children see how olives became oil and grapes became wine. With the town pool next door closed, the nearest swims are the summer outdoor Piscina de Pegões Gare and the Piscina Municipal de Alcochete.

Where do you get the minigolf clubs?
