Piscina de Pegões Gare (Piscinas Descobertas Municipais)

Montijo municipality is split in two: the town on the Tagus opposite Lisbon, and a separate rural area further east around Pegões and Canha. The council’s outdoor pools, the Piscinas Descobertas Municipais, are in that eastern part, on Rua das Piscinas in Santo Isidro de Pegões. The council’s 2026 posters call it the Piscina de Pegões Gare.

The pool reopened in August 2026 after refurbishment of the pool and tennis court, paid for through Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR). The council then did more work to get the grounds ready. It’s run by the AFDD (Associação para a Formação, Desenvolvimento e Desporto), a local sports association, with the council and the Pegões parish council. Alongside the pool there’s the refurbished tennis court and a new beach-volleyball court.

On the timetable published when the pool opened on 24 August 2026:

• Monday: closed
• Tuesday to Friday: open to the public from 14:00 to 19:00
• Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays: open to the public from 10:00 to 19:00

Weekday mornings are for organised groups. On Tuesdays and Thursdays there’s water aerobics at 10:00 and a swimming class for children aged 6 to 14 at 11:00. On Wednesday and Friday mornings the pool hosts holiday camps (campos de férias). The council’s page doesn’t say how to sign up for the children’s class or the camps, so ask at the pool.

The council hasn’t published a closing date for the season, so check before driving out late in the summer.

The 2026 price table has four rates, and under-5s go in free at every one of them:

A family of two adults and two children aged 5 to 10 would pay €10 on a weekday afternoon, or €6 if you arrive after 17:00.

The rules poster published by the council asks everyone to:

• Shower before getting in the water.
• Wear a swimsuit or proper swimming shorts.
• Keep children under 10 with an adult at all times.
• Not run around the pool, and not make dangerous dives or play games that put other swimmers at risk.
• Leave glass bottles and containers at home.
• Eat only in the areas set aside for food, and use the bins.
• Stay out of the water with open wounds or a contagious illness.
• Follow the lifeguards’ (nadadores-salvadores) and staff instructions.

The poster doesn’t mention swim caps, so check the pool’s rules on arrival and bring caps in case.

This is a small village pool, not a leisure complex. The council hasn’t published the pool’s size or depths, whether there’s a separate children’s pool, or what food, shade and parking there are, so it’s worth ringing Montijo council’s sports department before a long drive. The public sessions on weekdays start at 14:00, so a weekday visit is an afternoon trip. Weekend days are longer and busier.

Montijo town’s indoor Piscina Municipal on Rua Cidade Ponta Delgada was listed by the council as temporarily closed when we checked in September 2026.

If you’re heading back towards the Tagus, the Parque Urbano das Piscinas in Montijo town has a playground and a minigolf course, and KartMontijo lets children from four drive an electric kart indoors. Going the other way, Vendas Novas in the Alentejo has bigger outdoor summer pools with a children’s pool and lawns.

How much does the Pegões pool cost for children?

Under-5s are free. Children aged 5 to 10 pay €2 on weekdays (€1 after 17:00) and €3 at weekends (€2 from 14:30), on the 2026 price table.

Is it open every day?

No. It’s closed on Mondays and opens to the public on weekday afternoons from 14:00 and all day at weekends and on holidays, on the 2026 timetable.

Can children swim without a parent?

Under-10s must be with an adult at all times.

Are there lifeguards?

Yes. The rules poster tells swimmers to follow the lifeguards’ instructions.

Are there swimming lessons for children?

The 2026 timetable had a swimming class for ages 6 to 14 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 11:00, and holiday camps on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
