Piscina Municipal do Atlântico – Joaquim Baptista Alves

The Piscina Municipal do Atlântico, named after Joaquim Baptista Alves, is one of three indoor pools that Viana do Castelo council runs. It’s on Avenida do Atlântico, close to the seafront, and the council built it from scratch after renovating the older Frederico Pinheiro pool in the city centre. The council describes it as a pool for its swimming school, for school groups in term time, and for public swimming lanes kept for recreation.

For families, the reason to choose this pool over the others is its second pool: a big learner pool shallow enough for small children to stand in.

According to the council’s rules and its sports facilities page:

• The main pool is 25 metres by 10 metres and 0.90 to 1.33 metres deep. It’s too deep for toddlers, and children who can’t swim need an adult or floats.
• The learner pool is 10 by 10 metres and only 50 centimetres deep. That is shallow enough for most toddlers to stand in.

The building also has changing rooms, a bar and plant rooms. The council’s rules say people who come with a swimmer, such as parents waiting for a lesson to end, can only use the entrance hall and the bar, not the changing rooms or poolside.

On the first Sunday of every month, the council opens the Atlântico for Nadar em Família (Swimming as a Family), free of charge, from 9:00 to 12:00. The 2026 events page describes it as a chance for families to have fun together in the water. It is the easiest way to try the pool with small children before paying for anything. The council lists each session on its events calendar.

Public swimming at the Atlântico is called nado livre: swimming without a teacher, in the lanes and at the times set aside for it. The rules allow a maximum of 10 people per lane, and depending on the day and time, one or two lanes are kept for the public. Lanes are also given to primary schools and nurseries from 8:30 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 16:30 on weekdays, so weekday mornings are busy with school groups. Ask at reception for the current nado livre timetable.

The council’s latest published price table, dated 2023, gives:

• Adults: €1.75 a swim, or €15.46 for 10 swims, €29.22 for 20 and €41.17 for 30
• Children and seniors: €0.87 a swim, or €9.23 for 10, €17.52 for 20 and €24.82 for 30

On the older 2022 leaflet, children count as ages 9 to 15, seniors as over 60, and children up to 8 swimming with an adult during public swimming pay nothing. Prices are reviewed every year in line with inflation, so expect them to be a little higher now.

The council’s swimming school runs through the school year, with classes for learners (aprendizagem), improvers (aperfeiçoamento), babies (natação para bebés), pregnant women, therapy swimming and aqua aerobics.

On the 2023 table, both baby classes and children’s classes cost €12.86 a month for once a week and €22.08 for twice a week. There is a yearly enrolment fee of €6.69 (€4.77 to renew), which includes accident insurance. The older leaflet lists discounts of 10% for two brothers or sisters and 15% for three or more, for children under 18, plus smaller discounts for paying by the term or the year.

To enrol, the rules ask for:

• a user form, signed by a parent for anyone under 18
• a copy of the child’s ID (Cartão de Cidadão)
• a doctor’s note saying the child can swim or do physical activity

Each swimmer gets a photo card to show every time they come. Monthly fees are due by the 8th, with a late fee after that. If a class is full, you can join the waiting list for that season.

The council’s facilities page lists the pool as open Monday to Friday from 7:30 to 22:00 and Saturday from 7:30 to 19:30. Sundays aren’t on that list; the Nadar em Família sessions are the Sunday exception.

The swimming year runs from 15 September to 31 August: term time until 30 July, then a summer period in August. The pool closes for the first half of September for maintenance.

In April 2026 the council approved energy-saving works at all three of its pools, paid for by the Norte 2030 programme. At the Atlântico, the plans include a new roof, new floor tiles in the public changing rooms, heat pumps for the water and heating, and solar panels, with 180 days to finish. The council hasn’t said whether the pool will close while this happens, so phone +351 258 809 363 before you go.

If the Atlântico is busy, the council has two more indoor pools. The Piscina Municipal Frederico Pinheiro, on Avenida Capitão Gaspar de Castro in the city, has a 25-by-10-metre pool 1 metre deep and a babies’ pool for children up to 6. The Piscina Municipal de Barroselas, in the north of the municipality, opens weekdays from 7:30 to 21:30 and Saturday mornings.

Rainy-day plans in Viana go well with the chocolate factory museum. On a dry day, ride the Santa Luzia funicular up to the basilica, or go to the Parque Ecológico Urbano. In summer, Praia do Cabedelo is across the river.

Is there a baby or toddler pool at the Atlântico?

Yes. The learner pool is 10 by 10 metres and 50 centimetres deep, so most toddlers can stand in it.

How much is a swim?

On the latest published table (2023), €1.75 for adults and €0.87 for children aged 9 to 15. The older leaflet says children up to 8 with an adult swim free during public swimming.

Is it open on Sundays?

The council’s listed hours don’t include Sundays, apart from the free Nadar em Família family swim, on the first Sunday of the month from 9:00 to 12:00.

Do children need a swim cap?

The Atlântico’s leaflet doesn’t say. Most Portuguese public pools ask for a cap, so pack one and check at reception.

Can parents watch swimming lessons?

The rules say companions can only use the entrance hall and the bar, so parents wait there rather than poolside.
