PlayLab Porto

PlayLab Porto is a small play space in Porto’s Bonfim area for children from birth to six. It describes itself as a project about child development, where young children grow, explore and learn through play. Its best-known sessions are messy play: painting, sensory materials and no rule about staying clean. Alongside those, it runs music, yoga and playgroups.

It was set up by Cristiana Nicolau, a psychology graduate who found her calling working with young children during an internship. The space opened at the end of September 2024, and PlayLab’s agenda lists a party for its second birthday on 27 September 2026.

Messy play at PlayLab is a sensory and art session for children aged 1 to 6. Children paint, squash, pour and explore different materials, and they’re allowed to get as messy as they like. According to NiT, one wall is made of reinforced cardboard specifically so children can paint on it, and the floor is soft foam.

For toddlers, this is the whole point: to touch, smear and splash things you’d never allow at home. For four- to six-year-olds, it becomes more about mixing colours, making marks and trying out materials.

Dress your child in clothes you won’t miss, and bring a spare set. That’s the honest downside of a good messy play session: it comes home with you.

PlayLab’s playgroups are split by age: 0 to 12 months, 12 to 36 months and 3 to 6 years. NiT describes them as a mix of stories, songs, movement and sensory play. The music lab and yoga lab are for children from birth to six, and NiT mentioned mother-and-baby yoga among the sessions.

PlayLab’s services page also lists a movement lab (psychomotor development) and an emotions lab as coming soon, cooking workshops, themed celebrations and seasonal activities around Halloween, Christmas and Carnival.

Sessions are small. NiT reported 10 to 12 children per session, with each session lasting up to an hour. Compared with a big soft-play centre, it’s far calmer, which suits babies, shy toddlers and children who get overwhelmed by noise and crowds. It’s also a friendly way for newly arrived parents to meet other families with small children in Porto.

PlayLab describes its activities as for families. Plan to stay with your child, and ask PlayLab directly if you’re hoping for something else.

The only published prices we found are from NiT’s article in March 2025: single sessions cost €15 to €18, sessions with a guest specialist up to €30, and a pack of four €55 (€13.75 each). Packs of ten were also available, with no expiry date. Prices may have changed, so check before booking.

PlayLab runs birthday parties and events, planned to order when you book. It also offers private playgroups, either at PlayLab or at another venue, and regular or one-off sessions for schools, nurseries and associations. A group of homeschooling families with small children could ask about a private playgroup.

PlayLab is at Rua de Alves Redol 386, close to Lapa metro station, so you can arrive by metro without a car. Ask PlayLab about buggy parking and toilets when you book, as the sources don’t mention them.

After a morning of paint, the gardens of the Palácio de Cristal have peacocks and space to run. On a wet day, the Planetário do Porto runs sessions under its dome, with child tickets from age 3.
