Praia de Santo Amaro de Oeiras

Praia de Santo Amaro is the best-known beach in Oeiras, the town between Lisbon and Cascais where the Tagus estuary opens to the Atlantic. Oeiras council describes it as tucked between the western wall of the marina (Porto de Recreio) and the Forte de São Julião das Maias, and says a series of improvements has turned it into a good choice for a day by the sea.

What sets it apart for families is the Passeio Marítimo, the seafront promenade that wraps round the beach. The council says you can walk, run, skate and cycle on it (bikes at set times), and that strong lighting makes it pleasant in the evening too. It’s flat, so it works well for buggies, scooters and wobbly first bike rides.

Oeiras’s 2026 bathing season ran from 1 June to 30 September, with lifeguards on duty every day at its four bathing beaches: Santo Amaro, Torre, Paço de Arcos and Caxias. Before that, the council had lifeguards at the beaches on weekends and public holidays from 2 April. For 2026 it increased its team to 20 lifeguards, put defibrillators at every beach, and installed SOS One Up emergency columns at Santo Amaro and Torre.

Santo Amaro kept its Blue Flag in 2026. The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) classifies the water as “excellent”, and the latest analysis, on 16 September 2026, was marked suitable.

There was one interruption. On 18 June 2026 the beach was closed to bathing after a pollution incident in the Ribeira da Laje, a local stream: a burst pipe released treated leachate (the liquid that drains from waste) about 6 km from the beach. The health authority lifted the ban on 26 June. If you’re visiting after heavy rain or hear of an incident, check the APA’s info água site or the council’s website before the children go in.

Santo Amaro is Oeiras’s accessible beach under the “Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos” programme, which the council has run here since 2005 with the Oeiras volunteer fire brigade and the youth association ProAtlântico. It’s free, every day from 1 June to 30 September, 09:00 to 18:00. There are amphibious chairs, boardwalks across the sand to the water, and trained staff to help people with reduced mobility get into the sea.

For children, the council and the association More Moving Moments run “More Swimming Moments”, lending beach wheelchairs in two sizes: S for children up to 26 kg and M for children up to 40 kg. They’re kept at the beach concessions at Santo Amaro, Paço de Arcos, Caxias and Baía dos Golfinhos until the end of the season. Families ask for one on the day, first come first served, for a few hours, a morning or afternoon, or the whole day, and the lifeguard helps with using it.

The council lists lifeguards, a beach support post, daily machine and hand cleaning of the sand, toilets, showers reached by boardwalks, recycling bins and beach ashtrays. There are beach concessions and restaurants around the beach. Oeiras also runs four beach libraries, open every day from 09:00 to 19:00 until 7 September in 2026, lending books and newspapers to read by the sea.

Santo Amaro and Oeiras are both stations on the Cascais line from Cais do Sodré, and buses run along the Marginal road; check the walk from the station on a map before you set off with small children. The APA lists parking at the beach, but expect competition for spaces on summer weekends.

As Oeiras’s best-known beach, it’s busy in July and August. The June 2026 closure shows the water can be affected by pollution inland, so check before swimming after incidents or storms. There’s little natural shade. We couldn’t find Oeiras’s dog rule on the council pages we checked, so look at the notices at the beach entrance.

Follow the promenade west to Praia da Torre and the Piscina Oceânica de Oeiras, a seawater lido with a shallow children’s pool. East along the promenade, O Passo in Paço de Arcos is a café with a play room. Skaters can head to the Caxias skate park.

Is the beach at Santo Amaro de Oeiras good for toddlers?

It has lifeguards, toilets, showers and restaurants, and the flat promenade is easy with a buggy. Stay close at the water’s edge, as on any beach.
