Skate Park de Caxias

The Skate Park de Caxias is one of Oeiras council’s two public skate parks. It sits in the Jardim Municipal de Caxias, a municipal garden on Estrada da Gibalta in Caxias, between Lisbon and Cascais. It’s free, it’s open access, and it reopened on 12 July 2026 after a rebuild.

The council built its skate parks for skateboarding, inline skating and BMX, and says they’re aimed at young people from the age of 6. It describes them as a way to encourage healthy habits and give young people something to do in their free time.

The council lists these obstacles:

• Quarter pipes of different heights, curved ramps for turning around at the top, with a hip (where two ramps meet at an angle) and a corner.
• A jump box, a raised block with ramps up and down, for learning to ride over and, later, to jump.
• A bump (lomba in Portuguese), a gentle hump.
• A grind funbox, a box with edges to slide along.
• A spine, two ramps back to back, so riders can cross from one side to the other.
• A two-level start box, a raised platform to drop in from.
• A curved wall ride, a steep curved wall for advanced riders.

For a young beginner the useful parts are the bump, the lower quarter pipes and the flat ground. The start box, spine and wall ride are for experienced skaters.

The council reopened the rebuilt park on Sunday 12 July 2026, with the mayor, Isaltino Morais, at the ceremony. It says the works made the park safer, more modern and more functional, and ready for riders of all ages and levels. The reopening was marked with Next Gen, a skate championship and meet-up for younger skaters supported by the council, which brought young riders together for a morning of skating. The council lists the Caxias park as open for free use, without set hours, and doesn’t publish lighting details. We couldn’t find official information on toilets or water at the skate park, so bring a drink.

Bring a helmet, and knee and elbow pads for children. The park is shared with older riders, so teach children to wait their turn and look before dropping in. The concrete gets hot in summer afternoons.

The council’s second park is the SkatePark de Oeiras on Rua Monsenhor Ferreira de Melo in Nova Oeiras, opened on 13 April 2013. It’s also free, and unlike Caxias it has set hours: in winter (1 November to 31 March) weekdays 10:00 to 18:00 and weekends and holidays 14:00 to 18:00; in summer (1 April to 31 October) weekdays 10:00 to 20:00 and weekends and holidays 14:00 to 20:00.

• The Quinta Real de Caxias is a royal pleasure garden from the same era as the gardens at Queluz, with a cascade of terraces, a grotto and tunnels, lakes of tritons and terracotta statues by the sculptor Machado de Castro, led by Diana, goddess of the hunt. Entry is free, daily from 09:00 (to 21:00 in summer and 20:00 in winter).
• The Piscina Oceânica de Oeiras, a seawater pool on the beach, in summer.
• O Passo in Paço de Arcos for a family meal.
