Praia Fluvial da Lomba

Praia Fluvial da Lomba is a river beach (praia fluvial) on the Douro in the parish of Lomba, Gondomar, upriver from Porto. Here the Douro is held back by the Crestuma-Lever dam, so the beach sits on a long, wide stretch of river. The APA (Portugal’s environment agency) describes it as a rural beach with a long stretch of sand surrounded by trees, with sand and grass to sit on, a café-bar, toilets, a car park and a platform for leisure boats.

It’s a good alternative if your children find the Atlantic too cold or rough. The APA records the water at Lomba at about 21°C in the bathing season, against around 18°C on the Porto coast, and there are no ocean waves. The river does have a current, though, so it isn’t a still pool.

Lomba had one of the longest bathing seasons on the APA’s 2026 list for the north: from 30 May to 27 September, with lifeguards and a first-aid post throughout. That’s two weeks earlier at the start and two weeks later at the end than the coastal beaches around Porto.

The APA classes the water as excellent, based on recent years’ results, and in 2026 the environmental group Quercus again gave Lomba its “Qualidade de Ouro” (gold quality) award for consistently high water quality.

Late-season swimming notice

On 25 September 2026 the APA advised against swimming at Lomba because of microbiological contamination, and the notice was still showing when we checked on 28 September. The APA’s profile explains that short pollution episodes here, though unlikely, can follow illegal discharges into the river or into rainwater drains. In 2026 Lomba joined the national “Praia Acessível, Praia para Todos” (accessible beach) programme, after Gondomar council invested about €560,000 through its “Gondomar Inclui” project. The council lists:

• accessible routes from the car park to the sand, with adapted boardwalks
• reserved parking and accessible toilets
• an adapted first-aid post
• amphibious chairs for getting into the water
• all-terrain wheelchairs and crutches adapted for walking on sand
• a shaded area with adapted sunloungers

There’s also a specialist support service that helps people use the equipment and get into the river. It runs every day in the bathing season from 10:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 17:00, by booking in advance with the council.

The same boardwalks and paths make it easy with a buggy, and the grass and trees give you somewhere shaded to picnic.

According to the APA, Lomba has a café-bar, toilets, showers, a first-aid post, a car park and a platform for leisure boats. In 2026 Lomba and Gondomar’s other Douro beaches at Melres and Zebreiros were nominated for the public vote “Praia Fluvial do Ano” (river beach of the year), run by the Guia de Praias Fluviais de Portugal.

It’s a drive from central Porto, and we couldn’t find a public transport route to recommend, so plan on a car. River water can be affected by rain and upstream discharges, as the September 2026 notice shows. Boats use the platform, so keep swimmers in the lifeguarded area. We couldn’t find a published dog rule for Lomba.

Further up the Douro in Marco de Canaveses, Praia Fluvial de Bitetos has an inflatable water park in summer. Back towards Porto, the Parque Biológico de Gaia makes a good nature day, and Gondomar’s São Cosme pools are an indoor option on a grey day.

Is Praia da Lomba good for toddlers?

Yes, in the bathing season. There’s no surf, the water is warmer than the sea, and there’s sand, grass and shade. The river has a current, so stay with toddlers at the edge.

Is Praia da Lomba accessible for wheelchairs?

Can you swim at Praia da Lomba now?

Check the APA’s infoÁgua page. Swimming was advised against from 25 September 2026 because of contamination, and outside the bathing season there are no lifeguards.
