Praia Fluvial do Trabulo

The Praia Fluvial do Trabulo is on the River Vouga at the hamlet of Trabulo, in the municipality of Sátão, north of Viseu. It lies between the parish of Ferreira de Aves and the combined parish of Romãs, Decermilo e Vila Longa. The APA (Portuguese Environment Agency) describes it as a river beach in a rural setting, with a set of facilities that complement the natural surroundings.

The Vouga is the river that eventually reaches the sea at Aveiro. Here, far upstream, it’s a calm country river, and Sátão council promotes the beach for its natural scenery and the wide, still surface of the water.

The beach won the Praia Revelação (best new river beach) award from the Guia das Praias Fluviais in 2017, and has been growing in popularity since. It has also been nominated for the guide’s Praia Fluvial do Ano award.

Sátão council and the regional news agency Central Press list:

The children’s pool is the key feature for families with toddlers, giving them a small, contained space to splash away from the river. The sand pitch is a bonus for older children who want a game of football or volleyball between swims.

The official 2026 bathing season at Trabulo ran from 15 June to 31 August. Sátão council says lifeguards were on duty from 12:00 to 19:00, every day in July and August but only at weekends in June. So there’s no lifeguard in the morning, and none on weekdays in June. Plan your swims for the afternoon.

The APA classes Trabulo’s water as Excellent. In 2026 it received the Quercus Gold Quality award for the third year in a row, which goes to bathing waters with excellent results over several seasons. The APA’s profile lists possible sources of pollution upstream, including farming and forestry run-off and litter from beach users, and says a warning would be put up if the water were affected. Take your rubbish home.

Trabulo is in the countryside of Sátão, north of Viseu. The council describes good road access and parking. We couldn’t find a bus service to recommend, so plan to drive.

• It’s a simple rural beach, with a snack bar rather than a restaurant.
• We couldn’t find any information about wheelchair access, and the APA doesn’t list it as an accessible beach.

Sátão is a short drive from Viseu, where the Parque Urbano de Santiago and the woods of the Parque do Fontelo give children plenty of space, and the Piscinas Municipais de Viseu cover a cool day. In neighbouring Penalva do Castelo, Casa da Ínsua runs cheese-making workshops. To the south, Quinta da Estaca near Nelas is a farm day out.

Is Trabulo good for toddlers?

Yes. There’s a children’s pool and a lawn. Go in the afternoon when the lifeguards are on duty, and stay in the water with them.

What time are the lifeguards on duty?

From 12:00 to 19:00, daily in July and August and at weekends in June, in the 2026 season.

Is there food?

There’s a snack bar and a picnic area.

Is there parking?

Yes. The council describes good road access and parking.

Can you swim in September?

The official season ended on 31 August 2026, so there’s no lifeguard in September.
