Skatepark da Póvoa da Galega

Póvoa da Galega is a village in the parish of Milharado, in the Mafra municipality north of Lisbon. Its skatepark is small and made of concrete, and it was built with beginners in mind. Wasteland Skateparks, which lists it in its portfolio, describes it as a public skatepark made for starting out, where more experienced riders will still have fun in a small street area.

That makes it a useful counterweight to the big Lisbon parks. There’s no competition-size plaza full of fast teenagers here, so a child who is still learning to push, turn and roll up a ramp has room to try.

According to Skatedex, a skatepark directory, the park has:

• A bowl. A rounded hollow that a skater rides around and up the walls of. Beginners start by rolling in from the shallow side before trying to drop in from the edge.
• Quarter pipes. Curved ramps to ride up and come back down.
• Ledges. Low concrete edges to slide or grind along once a skater gets the hang of it.

Wasteland adds the small street area, which is where the ledges and flatter obstacles are.

It’s a village park, so don’t expect toilets, a café or lights. Skatedex notes that there is parking.

Mafra council runs the Circuito de Skate de Mafra, a competition that tours the skateparks of the municipality. The 2026 edition, its second, ran from 9 May to 5 October, with stages in Venda do Pinheiro, Ericeira and Mafra, a stage at Póvoa da Galega on 26 September, and the final in Mafra.

The categories are under-11, under-13, under-15 and open, for girls and boys, and registration was free on the council website. The council describes the circuit as street-style; Ericeira Mag reported bowl and street events. If your child is keen, watch the council’s events page next spring for the 2027 dates.

• Little kids (4 to 7): rolling around the flat, gentle runs up the quarter pipes and the shallow edge of the bowl, with a parent close by.
• Big kids (8 to 12): learning to drop in and carve around the bowl, and trying the ledges.
• Teens: a relaxed practice spot, and a home stage for the circuit.

Our sources don’t say whether scooters and bikes are allowed. In a small park, check with anyone already riding and give skaters priority.

• Helmet, knee pads and elbow pads, plus wrist guards for beginners.
• Concrete gets hot in summer and slippery when wet. Go in the morning or late afternoon in the warm months, and skip it after rain.
• Bring water, as no drinking fountain is listed.

The Parque Ecológico da Venda do Pinheiro, a short drive away, has a playground, picnic lawns and a concrete flow bowl for older riders. For a sea-view skatepark with lessons from age 5, head to the Boardriders skatepark in Ericeira. On a rainy day, the trampoline park at Urban Park Mafra is an indoor option, and the Palácio Nacional de Mafra is a big day out in itself.

Is the Póvoa da Galega skatepark free?
