Skatepark do Calhariz de Benfica

The Skatepark do Calhariz de Benfica is one of Lisbon’s newest skateparks. It opened in 2025 in a space that used to sit empty under the viaduct leading to the Segunda Circular, the ring road, in the Bairro do Calhariz. Before it was built, the Benfica parish council said, there was nowhere in the parish set aside for skating and similar sports.

The idea came from local young people. Their project won the 2023 youth participatory budget, a scheme where young residents propose projects and vote on them, and the build cost about €100,000. Works started in January 2025, and NiT reported in April 2026 that the park had opened the previous May.

It’s a street-style park, which means the obstacles copy things skaters find around the city. Time Out describes several technical street areas with stairs, walls and rails, a quarter-pipe ramp, curbs and walls to slide along for more advanced riders. When construction started, NiT reported plans for stairs, low walls, rails, more accessible ramps and more challenging ones, so there’s something for different levels.

Younger children and beginners should start on the easier ramps and flat ground, and leave the stairs and rails to experienced skaters. It’s used by teenagers and young adults as well as children, and NiT describes it as a meeting place as much as a sports space.

NiT reported that the park was designed for skateboards, inline skates, scooters and bikes, and for children and adults of every level. Time Out lists skaters, inline skaters and mountain bikers. That makes it one of the few Lisbon skateparks where the sources we found clearly mention scooters, which is useful for younger children who haven’t moved on to a board.

• Bring a helmet, and knee and elbow pads. Wrist guards help beginners, who tend to fall onto their hands.
• Street parks have lots of edges and steps. Keep small children away from the stairs and rails when older riders are using them.
• Teach children to wait at the side and look before they ride across a line someone else is using.
• There are no published hours, lighting or toilet details, so treat it as a daytime outing and bring water.

Time Out notes restaurants nearby and the Calhariz university residence next door, which hosts cultural events and has a vending machine for drinks.

Lisbon has about ten public skateparks, according to NiT, including ones in Campolide, Marvila and Monsanto. If your child wants to learn properly, Manolas Skate School teaches children from age 4 at several Lisbon skateparks. For a bike day out, the free Expo pump track in Parque das Nações has a separate loop for young riders.
