Parque de Lazer do Castelinho and Aquamuseu do Rio Minho

The Parque de Lazer do Castelinho sits on the bank of the River Minho in Vila Nova de Cerveira, a short walk from the old town. Its summer water play area, the Parque Aquático do Castelinho, is free, and it draws families from both sides of the border with Galicia.

It isn’t a water park with slides and wave pools. The council describes it as a play space built as a copy of the international stretch of the Minho, with replica channels, sluice gates (comportas), dams, water jets and fountains. Children spend their time pushing water around: closing a gate to see a channel fill up, opening it to let the water rush through, blocking a stream with their hands, and running through the jets when they get hot. The EntreRios magazine, writing about the July 2026 opening, called it modest in size, and that is fair. What it has is a lot of things to open, close and splash.

The water park is next door to the Aquamuseu do Rio Minho, a small council aquarium and fishing museum, so on a hot day you can alternate between getting soaked outside and cooling off indoors.

The water play area is seasonal. In 2026 it reopened on 24 June and runs until mid-September, Tuesday to Sunday, from 10:15 to 12:30 and from 14:15 to 19:30. It closes on Mondays for maintenance and over the lunch break every day, so plan lunch in town for 12:30 to 14:15. Opening dates move from year to year, so check the council’s news page before a special trip in June or September.

Out of season the rest of the park stays open: the playground, the sports pitches and the mini golf course.

The Aquamuseu opened in 2005 and gets about 25,000 visitors a year. It’s small enough to see in an hour, and it tells one story: a journey down the River Minho from its source to the sea.

The aquarium tanks hold between 1,200 and 6,000 litres each and follow the river downhill:

• The upper river, cold and fast, with trout and bogas (a native river fish).
• The middle river, which includes a dam and a tributary. Here you’ll find the migratory fish that swim between the sea and the river, such as salmon and sea lamprey, along with freshwater species like the ruivaco and pimpão.
• The lower river, a sandbank and salt marsh where grey mullet, flounder and sand smelt live.
• A rock pool from the beach just past the river mouth, with sea bass, sea bream, mussels and anemones.

Many children head straight for the otter enclosure (lontrário), home to an otter called Eureka. Otters live wild along the Minho. The museum explains that people have hunted them for their fur and meat and damaged the riverbanks they depend on, and that otters have already disappeared from some countries in northern Europe.

At the entrance, the Museu das Pescas shows how families along the river fished by hand: how the boats were built, how nets were mended, and the different fishing methods used on the Portuguese and Galician banks, with models, full-size tools and old photographs. Traditional fishing boats are still moored along the riverbank outside.

When checked in September 2026, the Aquamuseu cost €2 for adults, €0.50 for children and young people aged 5 to 18, and €1.50 for students, Cartão Jovem holders and over-65s. Under-5s and residents of Vila Nova de Cerveira go free.

It opens Tuesday to Sunday: from April to October, 10:00 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 18:00; from November to March, 09:30 to 12:30 and 14:00 to 17:00. It’s closed on Mondays and on some public holidays, including 1 January, 1 May, 1 and 5 October, 1 and 8 December and Christmas Day.

You don’t need to book as a family. Groups can book guided visits (€1.50 per person with a guide, minimum five people), and the Aquamuseu runs activities for school years from preschool to secondary, from painting the fishes of the Minho for little ones to studying the tiny animals that live in river mud, a treasure-hunt pedipaper, and climate change and the water cycle for older pupils. Beyond the water and the aquarium, the Castelinho has a children’s playground, a mini golf course, pitches for football, volleyball, handball and basketball, an exercise area for older people and an interpretive pond (charca) for spotting pond life. Mini golf runs through the year with seasonal hours (10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 19:30 in summer), and the pitches stay open into the evening from April to October. The council hasn’t published prices for the mini golf, so ask on arrival.

The council is clear that the park is not a picnic ground and that fires are not allowed, so don’t plan a barbecue.

Toddlers get the most from the shallow channels and gentle fountains, with a parent close by. Children of 4 to 7 spend hours working the sluice gates and dams and running through the jets, and they usually love the otter. Children of 8 to 12 can follow the idea of the model river, spot the difference between fish from the mountains, the dam and the estuary, and have a round of mini golf. Teenagers may find the water park young for them, though the pitches and the riverside are there.

The water park is outdoors with little said about shade, so bring sun cream, hats, swimwear, a towel and water shoes, and plan the hottest hours around the lunch closure or a spell in the Aquamuseu. The council hasn’t published rules on age limits or supervision, so treat it like any water play area and stay with young children.

Toilets, baby changing and parking aren’t described on the council’s pages, so check on arrival. The Aquamuseu is indoors, which makes the site a reasonable fallback on a wet day, although the water play itself is summer only.

Vila Nova de Cerveira is on the Minho between Caminha and Valença. Upriver in Valença, the Museu do Bombeiro has old fire engines, and the new Valença skate park and pump track is free for children on bikes and scooters. Down the coast in Viana do Castelo, the chocolate factory museum makes a sweet end to a summer day.

Is the Castelinho water park free?

Yes. The council runs it as a free, open-access water play area. Only the Aquamuseu next door charges, from €0.50 for children aged 5 to 18 in September 2026.
