Skatepark e Pumptrack de Valença

Valença opened its first skate park and pump track on Saturday 13 September 2025, in Cidade Nova, the newer part of town, right beside the Centro Coordenador de Transportes, the bus station. Over the opening weekend it drew hundreds of skateboarders, BMX riders, roller skaters and scooter riders from both sides of the border with Galicia.

It is a free, open-access council facility. The idea came from young people themselves: it was the winning project in Valença’s Orçamento Participativo Jovem, a youth participatory budget in which local young people propose and vote on how part of the council’s money is spent. It was paid for through the Norte 2030 regional investment plan.

The skate park is made of concrete modules laid out so riders can flow from one area to the next. The council lists ramps, rails, bowls and rest areas, and says the modules were designed so that riders can practise tricks in safe zones and move between spaces. For a young beginner, that mix matters: the lower ramps and flat run-outs are where you learn to roll, turn and drop in, while older teenagers use the bowls and rails.

The council describes it as suitable for everyone from beginners to experienced riders, and at the opening it was used for skateboarding, BMX, inline and roller skating and scooters.

Next to the skate park is a pump track: an asphalt loop of curves, bumps and jumps. The council says it is designed to make the most of riders’ momentum and inertia, which is the whole point of a pump track. Instead of pedalling or pushing, riders push down on the back of each bump and lean into the banked corners, and the track gives them speed. It takes a few laps to get the feel of it.

Pump tracks suit children who have just got confident on a bike or scooter and want something more exciting than a flat path, without the drops and tricks of a skate park. At the opening, local riders from the Associação de Cicloturismo Monte do Faro, a Valença cycling club, gave demonstrations alongside skaters from the area.

Children of 4 to 7 on scooters or small bikes can roll round the pump track slowly and practise balance, with a parent walking beside them at quiet times. Children of 8 to 12 usually get the hang of pumping within a session and start linking the corners, and they can try the smaller skate park ramps. Teenagers who already skate or ride BMX will spend most of their time in the concrete park, using the bowls and rails.

Toddlers on balance bikes may enjoy the gentler parts of the pump track, but only when it’s empty. On a busy afternoon, with older riders coming round fast, it’s no place for very small children.

The council hasn’t published rules for the park, including whether helmets are compulsory. A helmet is sensible for any child, and knee and elbow pads help beginners on concrete. Teach children the basic etiquette before they start: go round the pump track in the same direction as everyone else, wait your turn at the start of a ramp, and don’t stop in the middle of a line where someone is about to land.

Expect older teenagers and adults after school and at weekends, especially on warm evenings. When the park opened there was no night lighting, although the council said lighting was planned so that it could be used for longer. Benches and a children’s playground were also on the list of planned additions, so shade and seating may still be limited: bring water and a hat in summer, when concrete and asphalt get hot.

Being next to the bus station makes it one of the easier skate parks in the Alto Minho to reach without a car. There is no council information about toilets at the park itself, so plan for that. It is in the same town as Valença’s walled fortress, so the two fit easily into one trip.

In town, the Museu do Bombeiro has vintage fire engines and firefighting gear. Downriver in Vila Nova de Cerveira, the Castelinho water park and Aquamuseu has free water play in summer and a river aquarium with an otter. If your children love pump tracks, the FeelViana pump track on the coast at Cabedelo is another to try.

Is the Valença skate park free?

Yes. It’s a public council facility with no charge.

Can children use scooters and bikes there?

Yes. Skateboards, BMX bikes, roller skates and scooters were all riding there at the opening, and the pump track was built for bikes as well as boards.

Is it suitable for beginners?

The council describes it as built for all levels, from beginners to experienced riders. Beginners will find the pump track and the smaller ramps easier than the bowls.

Is it lit at night?

Not when it opened. The council said night lighting was planned, so check before planning an evening visit.
