Praia de Paço de Arcos

Praia de Paço de Arcos is the beach of Paço de Arcos, an old fishing town in the municipality of Oeiras, between Lisbon and Cascais. Oeiras council describes a place with a strong fishing tradition and well-regarded restaurants, and a beach wrapped by the Passeio Marítimo, the seafront promenade, that’s used as much for outdoor sport as for swimming.

VisitPortugal puts the sand at about 400 metres. It’s also known as Praia Nova (the new beach). Time Out Lisboa explains that there are really two beaches here: the Velha (old beach), a small patch of sand now used almost entirely by the fishermen, and the Nova, with a large beach backed by the promenade and rocks where people spread their towels when the tide is high.

The thing children remember is the Géiser Marítimo, a sea-water geyser just off the shore at Paço de Arcos. Time Out Lisboa describes a jet that can reach 60 metres, with its height managed by computer according to the strength of the wind.

It runs at set times, not all day. The latest timetable Oeiras council published (in January 2020) ran it from 15 June to 1 October between 08:00 and 14:30 and again from 16:30 to 23:00, with shorter slots the rest of the year. Treat those as a guide and check before promising a small child a fountain.

Paço de Arcos sits on the estuary where the Tagus meets the Atlantic. The Portuguese Environment Agency (APA) classifies it as a transitional-water beach, meaning a mix of river and sea water, and rates the water “good”, the middle of its three passing grades. That’s one step below the “excellent” rating at Santo Amaro and Torre further west. The latest analysis before the end of the 2026 season, on 7 September, was marked suitable for bathing.

VisitPortugal gives an average summer water temperature of 17 to 19°C. The APA flags no special waves and no risk of falling rock here, unlike the surf beaches further west. Paço de Arcos doesn’t fly the Blue Flag.

Oeiras’s 2026 bathing season at Paço de Arcos ran from 1 June to 30 September, the dates set nationally in Portaria 204-A/2026/1. The council had lifeguards on its beaches every weekend and public holiday from 2 April, before the season officially began. For 2026 it had 20 lifeguards across its four bathing beaches and placed defibrillators at every one. Outside the season there are no lifeguards, so keep children out of the water.

The council lists a beach support structure with toilets, showers with boardwalks, recycling bins and daily cleaning by hand and machine, plus a beach bar and restaurant. VisitPortugal adds sunbed and umbrella hire and areas for handball, football and volleyball on the sand, so bring a ball for children who’d rather run than swim. The APA lists parking nearby.

The promenade itself is half the reason to come. It runs west to Praia de Santo Amaro and Praia da Torre, flat and wide enough for scooters and buggies.

Paço de Arcos isn’t one of Portugal’s official accessible beaches (the APA lists no amphibious chair here). It is, however, one of four Oeiras beaches in the More Swimming Moments project, run by the council with the association More Moving Moments. It lends beach wheelchairs for children and young people with mobility difficulties, size S (up to 26 kg) and M (up to 40 kg), from the beach concession until the end of the season. Ask on the day; they go in order of arrival, for a few hours, a morning, an afternoon or the whole day, and the lifeguard helps with using the chair. For an amphibious chair and staff help in the water, go to Santo Amaro.

Take the Cascais line from Cais do Sodré to Paço de Arcos station and walk down to the sea, or drive along the Marginal (the N6). The APA lists parking by the beach; on hot weekends, the train is the calmer option.

The water is estuary water graded “good” rather than “excellent”, and the sand is small compared with Carcavelos. The Marginal runs right behind the beach, so it’s a town beach with traffic noise. The geyser runs only at certain times. On summer weekends the sand fills up.

O Passo, a café on Rua Costa Pinto near the station, has a play room for small children. West along the promenade are Santo Amaro and the Piscina Oceânica de Oeiras, a seawater lido. East is Praia de Caxias, and skaters can head to the Caxias skate park.

Is there a lifeguard at Paço de Arcos?

Yes, during the bathing season, which ran from 1 June to 30 September in 2026, and at weekends and on public holidays from early April.

Can you get there by train?

Yes. Paço de Arcos is a stop on the Cascais line from Cais do Sodré.

Is the water clean?

The APA rates it “good”, and its latest 2026 analysis was marked suitable for bathing. It’s estuary water, and Oeiras’s beaches further west score “excellent”.

When does the geyser run?

At set times. The council’s last published timetable (2020) had it on from 08:00 to 14:30 and 16:30 to 23:00 between mid-June and 1 October. Check locally.

Are dogs allowed?

VisitPortugal says pets with their owners are allowed on the small Praia dos Pescadores (the old beach) next door. Follow the signs on the main beach in the bathing season.
