Quinta da Conceição

The Quinta da Conceição in Leça da Palmeira is what Matosinhos council calls its principal public park. It sits near the mouth of the River Leça, beside the docks of the Port of Leixões and close to the Exponor exhibition centre, with entrances on Rua de Vila Franca and on Avenida Dr. Antunes Guimarães.

Its story goes back to 1481, when Franciscan friars moved here from the windswept coast at Boa Nova and built the Convent of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. After the religious orders were closed down in 1834 the convent was sold and most of it disappeared. Part of the old land became docks for Leixões, and from 1956 the rest was turned into a public park, redesigned in the 1960s by the architect Fernando Távora.

The park has a children’s playground with swings and a slide, according to the family directory Portugal With Kids. Matosinhos council included the Quinta da Conceição playground in its maintenance plan for 36 play areas across the concelho: it treated the moss and lichen that had made the equipment slippery, repaired wooden parts and fixed the drainage that let water pool on the ground. The council hasn’t published a list of the play equipment, so expect a traditional playground rather than an adventure one.

The park also has lawns big enough for ball games and a picnic table, so it works well for a toddler who needs to run and a parent who needs to sit down.

Beyond the playground the park is a mix of woodland and gardens on different levels, joined by paths. The woods are mainly English oak, cork oak and eucalyptus, which makes the park shady on a hot day. Near the entrance there’s a big lawn with an old New Zealand Christmas tree (Metrosideros excelsa) and avocado trees, and low box hedges divide smaller garden rooms.

Children who like exploring can hunt for the stone things scattered through the park: porticoes, stone benches, statuettes, columns, a stone cross with an image of Our Lady of the Conception, a chapel, a stepped water tank, a drinking fountain and a spring. Of the convent itself, you can still see the old cloister, some large granite fountains and the Chapel of São Francisco. The best find is a Manueline doorway, the carved entrance of the convent church. In the 19th century it was moved to a private estate in Gaia, and later it was brought back to its original place.

In the 1960s, while Távora was reworking the park, a young architect called Álvaro Siza Vieira designed its outdoor swimming pool, which opened in 1965. It has changing rooms and a bar. Siza also designed the Piscina das Marés, the rock pools on Leça beach nearby.

Don’t plan a swim here for now. When we checked in September 2026, Matosinhos Sport, which runs the pool, said it was closed “until 2027”, without giving a reopening date or a reason. It normally opens only in the summer bathing season, between June and September, and in 2025 it was open every day from 09:00 to 19:00. Architectural guided visits are still arranged by booking through the Casa da Arquitectura, which suits older children with an interest in buildings more than young swimmers. For a swim nearby, Siza’s Piscina das Marés on Leça beach is also run by Matosinhos Sport; check its own season before you go.

The park also has two tennis courts, which are paid.

Toddlers get the swings, the slide and the lawns. Children of 4 to 7 can explore the paths and find the fountains and the stone cross. Children from 8 can go looking for the Manueline doorway and the cloister, and older children interested in design will enjoy seeing an early Siza building. Teenagers can play tennis.

The park is free and, according to Portugal With Kids, dogs are allowed. The paths run on different levels, so some parts need steps or slopes with a buggy. The woods keep the park cooler than the beach on a hot day. There’s no official list of toilets or a café for the park itself; the pool bar is closed along with the pool. By car, the council’s directions are the A28 towards Viana do Castelo, then the Matosinhos exit for Avenida Dr. Antunes Guimarães.

Leça da Palmeira has plenty close by. The Piscina das Marés is Siza’s other pool, built into the rocks of the beach. The Farol de Leça is a working lighthouse you can climb on Wednesday afternoons, and the Museu dos Bombeiros has old fire carts. On a wet day, Jumpyard Matosinhos is an indoor trampoline park in Perafita, just north of Leça.
