Parque da Cidade de Barcelos

The Parque da Cidade is the main park in Barcelos, the Minho town known for its clay rooster and pottery. It sits beside the Pavilhão Municipal, the town’s sports pavilion, and has three entrances. The council describes it as a place for picnics and get-togethers, with picnic tables and a children’s playground it says was recently renovated.

It’s a useful free stop for families already in town for the pottery museum. It is also where the town holds its big summer craft fair, which is the best time for children to visit.

The council hasn’t published a list of the playground’s equipment, only that it has been recently renovated. Expect a modern town playground rather than a big adventure one. It’s a good place for toddlers and children up to about eight to play while parents sit nearby.

Around it you’ll find:

• Picnic tables, which the council highlights as one of the park’s main uses.
• Outdoor exercise machines for adults and older children.
• Toilets in the Pavilhão Municipal next door. When the park reopened in 2020 the council said these were the pavilion facilities open to park users.
• A sculpture of Barcelos clay figures, part of the Roteiro do Figurado de Barcelos, a trail of public artworks based on the town’s traditional pottery figures. Figurado are small hand-made clay figures of people, animals, devils and musicians, often brightly painted and a little odd, and children usually enjoy spotting what each one is doing.

When the park reopened in July 2020, the council gave its hours as 07:00 to 22:00, Monday to Sunday. No newer timetable has been published, so treat these as a guide.

For ten days each summer, the Parque da Cidade hosts the Mostra Internacional de Artesanato e Cerâmica, Barcelos’s international craft and ceramics fair. The 43rd edition ran from 31 July to 9 August 2026, with free entry. Dozens of craftspeople, potters and producers work live at their stands, and the 2026 programme included 25 workshops in traditional crafts, as well as folk dancing, music and local food.

For a child who likes making things, watching a potter shape clay figures is the draw. The fair came a few days after the Figurado de Barcelos was added to Portugal’s national inventory of intangible cultural heritage in 2026. Look for the council’s announcement in July for next year’s dates and workshop list.

The council also uses the park for family events. In May 2026 it held the second Família em Movimento, a free Saturday morning of street entertainment, family workshops, a pottery and clay-modelling workshop, a guided walk through the historic centre, an animal-care talk with a dog and cat adoption fair, and a dance show. Some activities needed booking by email or phone. It was part of the town’s Mês da Família (family month), so watch for it again each May.

• Cost: free.
• Shade: the council doesn’t describe the tree cover. Bring hats and water on hot days.
• Food: no café inside the park is listed. Bring a picnic, which is what the tables are for, or eat in the town centre.
• Busy times: the craft fair in late July and early August brings big crowds. Go on a weekday morning if you want the playground quiet.

The Museu de Olaria holds about 9,000 pottery pieces, including clay devils and roosters, and runs workshops where children can paint a rooster. In July and August, the outdoor pools at the Piscinas Municipais de Barcelos are the way to cool off. Braga is a short drive away; its Complexo Desportivo da Rodovia has a big free skate park, a climbing wall and a playground.

Is the Parque da Cidade in Barcelos free?

Yes. It’s a public council park with no entry charge.
