Piscinas Municipais de Barcelos

The Piscinas Municipais de Barcelos are run by the Município de Barcelos itself. There are two parts to know about. In summer the outdoor pools (piscinas exteriores) open every day, with lawns around them, and they’re the cheapest full day out by the water in the area. From mid-September to July the indoor pool runs a swimming school for babies, children and adults.

The rules mention a lawn, sun loungers, an entrance corridor, toilets and a bar, which gives you a good idea of the layout: a grassy summer pool park with its own snack bar.

The council set the 2026 outdoor season from 4 July to 6 September, every day from 9:00 to 19:00. In 2025 the pools opened a week early, on 23 June, because of hot weather and requests from swimmers, so the start date can move.

In the first weekend of July 2026, 4 and 5 July, entry was free because of the government’s heat alert. Staff could rotate swimmers through the day if queues built up at the ticket desk.

Prices from the 2025 season, the most recent published figures found:

• Children up to and including age 6: free, with an ID document
• Age 7 and over: €3 for a full day

The council caps the outdoor pools at 400 people at once. On hot weekends that fills up, so arrive near 9:00 if you want a spot on the grass. You can leave for up to five minutes and come back in, using a special ticket from the staff, which helps if you need something from the car.

Rules parents get caught by

The outdoor pool rules, published by the council in June 2026, are strict:

• Children under 12 can’t come in without an adult who stays with them the whole time and is responsible for watching them.
• No ball games, no running and no jumping into the water.
• No large inflatables (boias grandes) or other objects that could hurt other swimmers.
• You can’t push parasols, chairs or anything else into the lawn, and you can’t reserve spots on the grass or the loungers.
• Everyone walks through the footbath and showers before getting in, and wears proper swimwear.
• Shoes or flip-flops are required in the entrance corridor, the toilets and the bar.
• No glass bottles or cups, no alcohol, no speakers and no animals except guide dogs.
• Swimmers with verrucas, athlete’s foot or small cuts on their feet must wear short rubber pool socks.
• If the pool closes for a while after a “fecal accident”, vomiting or bleeding, you don’t get your money back.

The ban on pushing parasols into the grass means shade is whatever trees there are and whatever you can prop up without spikes. Bring hats, sun cream and a pop-up tent that doesn’t need pegs.

Group bookings for holiday clubs

Morning sessions from 9:00 to 12:30 were reserved for institutions from 1 July to 4 September 2026, with a reduced €1.50 per child for eligible Barcelos organisations. If you run a home-education co-op or a summer club registered in Barcelos, the council’s information sheet explains how to apply. Expect groups in the mornings on weekdays.

The indoor pool runs from 15 September to 31 July. For 2026/27, lessons for babies, beginners, learners and improvers start on 1 October. Families already enrolled renew from 14 to 26 September, and new enrolments open on 1 October. You enrol in person at the pool office, which is open 9:00 to 20:00, and you need your citizen card (cartão de cidadão). If you’re on the waiting list, keep your details up to date when your child moves up an age group.

Levels and ages

The 2025/26 class map shows how the school is organised:

• Bebés (babies), 18 months to 3 years: 40-minute classes on weekday evenings from 18:00 and on Saturday mornings from 9:05.
• Iniciação (beginners), 4 to 7 years: classes twice a week, from 16:50 on weekday afternoons and on Saturday mornings.
• Aprendizagem (learners), 8 to 14 years: twice-weekly evening classes and Saturday classes.
• Aperfeiçoamento (improvers), 8 to 14 years: for children who can already swim and want to improve their strokes.

Adults have their own learner and improver classes, as early as 7:10, so a parent can swim while a child is in a class at a similar time.

Lesson prices

From the council’s price list for the indoor pool, checked in September 2026:

• Babies (18 months to 3 years), once a week: €20 a month
• Children aged 4 to 14, once a week: €12.50 a month
• Children aged 4 to 14, twice a week: €25 a month
• Adults, once a week: €14 a month; twice a week: €28

The council’s pages don’t publish a public swimming (utilização livre) timetable for the indoor pool, so phone the pool office before you go if you want a family swim outside lesson times.

The outdoor pools are a summer-only plan: you need a warm day, and the council can cancel group sessions in bad weather. The 400-person cap, busy lawns and strict rules on balls and inflatables suit families who want to swim and picnic more than children hoping for slides. For slides, the Scorpio pools in Guimarães are about 40 minutes away.

Barcelos is the home of the painted clay rooster, and the Museu de Olaria is full of the clay devils and roosters local potters are known for, and fills a cooler morning before an afternoon swim. In Braga, 25 minutes east, the Rodovia pools charge €1 after 17:00 in summer.

How much are the outdoor pools in Barcelos?

In 2025 a full day cost €3 for anyone aged 7 or over, and children up to 6 went free with an ID document. The council hadn’t published a different 2026 price when checked.

Can my child go to the Barcelos pools without me?
